i7 920 Hyperthreading Issues

Thread Starter
This one really baffles me.
I built a machine for a friend two years ago with an i7 920, X58-UD3R and 6GB GSKILL 1600. I just got the parts back because he wanted a hardware refresh. It turns out that he wants to give it to another friend, the problem is there is something seriously wrong hyperthreading now.

I had the 920 running at 3.6 with hyperthreading off. I got the machine and decided to start fresh with the BIOS settings. I go to turn hyperthreading off to start overclocking and it wont post. Of course I thought it was some other setting I fat fingered in the BIOS, but no. The machine will run up to 3.2GHz with hyperthreading on, but with hyperthreading OFF it will not post.

I've done a BIOS update, checked the RAM, made sure the CPU was seated properly... I don't know what else to try.

Have you tried flashing the latest bios as well to see if that would make a difference at all?

Yeah, I'm running FI right now, the FK1 beta bios didn't fix it either.

I also have i7 920, and EX58-UD3R, AND G.Skill 6 Gb (though just 1066 with non-working 1333 CL 7 XMP profile).

And I have the exact same issue. I'm trying to look around for the reason, haven't found any... guess it's just an unlucky hw combo..?

I'm not sure if I have the latest BIOS though, that's gonna be my next step... Also I just found out this morning that my PSU is taking its last breaths, judging from the sound the fan is gonna die soon. That might also be the problem...

Just to report back, it only needed the newest bios. Latest one has been released this year (2012), after that HT can be disabled without any problems.
