[ArsTechnica] Don't panic? Windows 8 and the "ribbonification" of Explorer

When Microsoft first revealed that the Explorer file manager would be outfitted with a ribbon-style toolbar in Windows 8, responses were loud, passionate, and frequently negative.

The company recently described changes that it has made to Windows 8's Explorer in response to the feedback. These include some small modifications to the ribbon experience along with some other refinements of Explorer's new features. Though the changes themselves have been welcomed, the continued hostility toward Explorer's redesign remains.

i still think the ribbon is one of the dumbest things they have come up with. made office a total pita. now i just have to turn off the ribbon and create a custom toolbar with all the commands that i actually use.

they should at least let you revert backt o the old style instead of trying to cram it down everyones throats

Microsoft playing the whole "statistics" thing is really annoying. There is zero technological/software/man power reasons why they cannot let people customize Explorer's toolbar, let alone Explorer its self. I don't care if they make ribbon the default. Just why can't they give us the option to replace it with something else. They're no reasons they can't do it. Practically the vast majority of people on this planet use(and for the most part, forced to) Windows. Even if only 20% use said features, that's millions of people. They have billions of dollars. They can easily support it.

Just give us customization Microsoft and you wont have hate anymore. Just do it. They're no reasons why you can't. Stop forcing us to use what you want us to use.

I tried it in the developer preview (see my review in the link in the sig) and I didn't like it. Vista didn't do it right, 7 got it right, now they are just trying to put on the ribbon stuff people don't use and make stuff people actually do use more difficult to access. I'll try the beta to see what improvements were made.

Ribbons are misleading.. I want my present!!

I feel that MS is over complicating things with every new installment of Office... and there is no way I would ever want that on explorer. End task... explorerer.exe.

I need a dedicated Linux box. biggrin.gif

While this may not be on topic - it does revolve around Windows 8.

Does anyone know if the Metro UI is locked down, or will developers and users be allowed to customize it? And by customize, I mean - will users (or developers) be able to use the Metro UI interface but customize it's 'look' and 'feel'? Or will it be totally constrained to the 'tile' style that it currently has?

Anyone know?

All signs so far point to a locked in Metro interface. They might let you change the color scheme, but for the most part, its locked into a tile interface and you cannot disable it and chose to use either just a traditional desktop or the new tablet interface.
