[RPS] Thought: Do We Own Our Steam Games? - Page 7

I still think it would be a great idea if Steam made a special day where customers of steam can request their games sent to their homes with a retail cd physical package and not worry about losing games they previously owned on their library list. This occurs the idea if someone stole their account or what if they don't wanna use a computer anymore?

They should do that. What if we have no internet one day but i know we will lol.

I'd rather have physical copies TBH.

The key codes and whatever customer support there is is what we pay for.

Sure you own rights to the media. You have the right to watch the movie or play the game if you bought it. You don't have the right to reproduce or sell the media, but you do have rights to use it for your own consumption.

I dunno about Origin but Steam you can freely move the content around. DVD burners are cheap, you can always make a physical backup.

True, you don't get the same production quality of a box copy, but in a sense you now have a physical copy of the media. Many games can be run from their own .exe files found in the games folder.

So in this sense I don't see the difference from having to put in a CD/DVD or running it through Steam Launcher.

If we did own the games it wouldn't be against the TOS to sell our Steam account.. sucks to have a bunch of games you no longer play just sitting there.

If I buy my son a copy of Lego Pirates of the Carribean, he has the right to play the game after I install it on his PC. The company has the right to protect it's intellectual property in the shape of copyright protection. If I abuse or infringe on those copyright laws, they are not coming after the copy of the game I bought, they are coming after me legally.

Same thing goes with what ever digital-content you purchase and what ever ToS, EULA, etc. you agree to when you install that digital content.

In the case of Steam/Valve... if you abuse or infringe upon the terms or agreement, they reserve the right to prevent you the use of their services, game included.

You pay £30-£60 for a game, you own the disc, box, etc, and should be able to lend it to mates and not worry about the publisher pulling strings at any point after sale. You choose to pay for the game you should be able to keep it and do a certain number of things with it. Like you say there's a problem with full ownership, but people don't want full ownership. They just want away with this VIP code stuff and the ability to play these games as and when they like (not needing to be online to play an offline game, for example).
I think most importantly that since you choose to buy the game you are already a friend to the publisher. Why are we being treated like second rate idiots? Like the author of the article says, it's like GAME coming to your house and taking away all your games because you said their store is crap. You think that's ok, because we opt into buying these titles that we lose control? On the contrary, we should be in total control.

I never said I agreed with that, just pointed it out. To be honest, I don't really care either way. The current system works OK for me now, the only real downside I see the 2nd hand sales. But, I find that's more a minor grievance than a deal breaker. I feel the downsides of pure ownership outweigh those of a licensing system. What my main point was that when you buy a game, you *agree* to license it. If you don't agree with this, then you shouldn't buy it. You won't change the way stuff works by buying it and then moaning.

Nothing hurts more than small profits.

Absolutely and you should exercise your rights to make personal backups. Don't disagree with that at all.

The question is, do you even own the game at all, no matter the distribution method?

With discs, it is just a copy of the game that requires a key, in order to work. They can ban you key, so do you still own the game? No, you just own a physical copy......with no cd key, therefore it is rendered useless.

Yeah, this exactly.

I would say that this is on more peoples minds these days since everything is tied to some sort of online activation/verification method, and can be easily locked as opposed to "back in the day" when you had your physical media and that's it.

But the terms of an EULA have not really inherently changed much, only that now that distributor can more easily exercise their control over it.

People should be informed of the "purchases" they make when they make them. It's the sad truth that a lot of people entirely mis-understand that when they are "buying" media, they do not own it.

But this brings up an interesting situation to think about.

And instead of `purchasing` they should start calling it `renting` or a `loan` as when you `purchase` something then it is yours. I purchased my dinner last night, I don't see Food Lion coming here asking for THEIR products back.

And it's not like we can escape it anymore by buying `physical` copies, as we still have to register those copies with a `digital` distributor such as Steam when we install it in most cases.
