Yes, better performance.
By the time XDR2 is initiated, that kind of bandwidth would be needed. The power consumption and efficiency is icing on the cake. In all likelyhood Maxwell would choke with GDDR5( at least in it's current state ).

By the time Maxwell comes out, stacked DRAM will be around.

XDR2 is already here. Tested and refined. Oh and working.

Its too bad NV didn't fight to the finish. Lack of intestinal fortitude frown.gif Rambus needs to be put out of their misery, worthless patent trolls.

Not only does it increases the memory bandwidth but does so consuming much lower power!

nice information...if nvidia really use this and could done it well for their new cards its going to give a huge leap in performance. and I do hope for this.

I recall reading before that both AMD and Nvidia next gen was supposed to come with XDR2. AMD released without it to be out on time and it was chalked up to premature rumor. I hope the delays ironing out Kepler and this timing with RAMBUS gives the opportunity for Kepler to ship with XDR2. It would make the delays worth while for me.

Personally I've been bummed that Im ready to upgrade and can't. I've gone as far as looking into an AMD HD3D monitor and 7970, had the MSI Lightning version been out by now I may have already done so.

Guess we'll find out soon enough how this private settlement plays out. Five year deal sounds like both companies are getting something worth thier while in a business sense.

One thing we know for sure is XDR2 is inevitable. thumb.gif

They are not necessarily the same thing.

Better in the sense of less power, less heat, more bandwidth and possibly less cost, but on benchmarks, it does not have higher performance.

If I can get a card that may costs less, uses less electricity and heat but performs just as well as a more expensive card, is that not better?
Similar to the Nvidia 9800 GTX, 9800GTX+ and GTS 250. Same basic card, similar performance, but "better" in efficiency. Yes many gripe about the "rebranding" of this, but their were improvements made to make it perform better, even though it did not really have higher performance.

Yeah, geez, what are the odds that we'll see a dual-GPU card? that would be unprecedented.

Not everyone is insane enough to bother with multi GPU setups.

If the 7990 is going to be a legitimate competitor with the 680, it'd need to be priced very agressively.
