Help thinking about making a server - Page 2

Your right it seems like a total bargain I'll probably get that, might look at freeNas eventually, and for me at work i can use FTP's, actually i use the work FTP to post client data for download which is why i mentioned it as I've used it but never set one up.

So other then power usage, when building the specs for one is there anything i should look for in particular, i have seen that ECC ram is more reliable? Any thing i should avoid? i also assume that integrated graphics is all that is needed. Right now i think i should be getting some half decent processor (would amd work? i notice they have 4-8 cores a lot cheaper then intel) 4-8gbs of ram and i plan on starting with 2, 2tb wd greens there 119$ right now on ncix in raid 1 for mirroring. Then a psu based on system requirements as well as a CD drive. and eventually a box with hotswap bays. Would that be sufficient

also does whs2011 support hot swapping drives?

Not sure about the hot-swapping drives, it does, I've gone as far as plugging in SATA drives directly to the board while booted up and in the disk management window.

You don't need ECC RAM for a server of this scale, and was running my Home server off an Athlon X3 with 1 of those 3 cores dedicated to AMD GPU folding, and I was still ble to download/upload files, have uTorrent running, a TV tuner recording shows, and streaming and encoding movies on the fly while at work. So as you can see you don;t need a powerful CPU for a server of this scale, just a strong dual-core, triple/quad if you want to be completely future proof.

Alright you mentioned folding whs2011 supports that? I was interested in starting it on my main PC now that i have it up and running fully. Also could share my DVD drive from my main pc while installing the WHS and then remove it? since it shouldn't need one with the exception of initial setup?

I was looking at

AMD Athlon II X3 455 --87
Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P AMD760G mATX AM3 AM3+ -- 60 6 Stat 3 ports supports raid, and integrated graphics,
Mushkin Enhanced Silverline Stiletto 8GB 2X4GB PC3-10666 DDR3
34
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W ATX 20/24PIN SLI Ready Modular Cables ---- 39
old labtop hdd to run os on (200gb)
2x2tb wd green 240 for raid 1 ----240
case: not sure whats best something cheap or something that has easy drive removal

Os whs11 ---50

Total of 510
Does that seem like a reasonable? set up?

That seems pretty close to what I have, and you don;t even have to do RAID 1 with the drives, WHS 2011 has a built-in drive mirroring tool that I use for my 2x 1.5 TB that essentially the same thing, but on OS software level.

i guess the only thing i have to consider now is if i want the home server or a second 560ti. since it is probably not worth upgrading from my i5 to a ivy bridge for Kepler cards when they come out.

3.0 GHz Intel Core2 Duo CPU Processor E8400
2 GB RAM
DVD/CD Multi-Recorder
On-board Gigabit Ethernet
8 x USB 2.0 connectors on front(2) and back(6)
1 VGA Connector
1 Serial Connector
1 eSATA Connector

Just one of those would be perfect for a server, you could maybe hook up a second one as a dedicated web server, a third as a dedicated back-up server, a fourth as an HTPC, and a fifth as a hot spare.

Install Vanilla Ubuntu on each one, then VMWare or something and have each machine as a dedicated something, then if one machine goes down, swap the HDD to the spare and you have virtually no downtime thumb.gif

Wow, that's not a bad deal, not many places like that in Canada, at least in Ontario the trend is green rebates for companies that recycle electronics at a recycling depot directly.

check this site https://www.gcsurplus.ca/mn-eng.cfm?&snc=wfsav&sc=ach-shop&jstp=sly&hpcs=7000&vndsld=0

its the federal auction site, and try going to the headquarters building, if they haven't put it up as an auction they have a cash and carry policy.

Also the building i work at is the feral forestry building, i work in digital Geomatic's so I am also going to try to intercept some out going pc's. we send them out by the pallet, i believe 36 at, and they all go to that feral recovery building. Cash and carry is the best i find i pick up monitors from there sometimes they get lots of 17" and 19" LCDs even older server equipment but the auctions are always like 36 pc's or 10 server blades but worth keeping an eye on that site.
