[Build Log] Upgrade i5-2500k Log

Thread Starter
I finally got enough money to upgrade my sig rig and I'm going to a i5-2500k. Gonna be an awesome upgrade I think. Not going to a big upgrade, but an upgrade none the less.

The only thing I'm worried about is Windows. Am I going to have to go and rebuy Windows since I'm replacing the motherboard? Or should it be fine just plugging the SSD back into the board and booting up?

What I currently have for a system:

Intel C2D E8400
GSKILL 2x4gb DDR2 1066
nVidia GeForce GTX260 896mb
Asus Soundblaster Audigy X2
Asus P5Q SE PLUS Motherboard
Corsair HX520 Power Supply
CM HAF 912
CM Hyper 212+ Heatsink

I ordered the following for the upgrade:

Intel i5-2500k
ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3
GSKILL 2x4gb DDR3 1600

The board and ram have already arrived, gotta love Newegg for getting it here in 2 days instead of 3. And I went ahead and got the processor today and shipped it Next Day before 2pm PST, wouldn't that be awesome if it came today as well lol.

I'm hoping to be able to buy another set of RAM and either another GTX260 or a 560 in the next 2 weeks or so. I'll get pictures up asap, gotta find my camera to make em look good. Also, one question though, this board has a couple heatsinks near the processor area and I have the Hyper 212+, I hope I'm going to be able to fit that on there or will I need to remove those heatsinks?

Here's some pictures of the parts that arrived today. The motherboard box is a little beat up, but it doesn't appear damaged on the actual board itself. I have 15 days according to Newegg to send it back for replacement if it was damaged during shipping. Have no way of testing it right now though without the i5 coming hopefully tomorrow.

Thought I'd throw in a Windows score before the new one is built just for kicks.

Everything hooked up for testing and making sure nothing got killed during shipping.

I got the same motherboard last week and had really good results with it and a 2500k also! There are some great guides on OCN but this one in particular is tailored to asrock boards and is what helped me:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/complete-overclocking-guide-for-sandybridge-asrock-motherboards

Good luck and I look forward to your updates!! thumb.gif

I have a thermalright venomous-X on this board and had no problems with the heatsinks at all.

Thought I'd just add in that I had an 2500k and gtx 260 together for a little bit. I borrowed my friends 260 for an sli bench and it scored about as good as my 560ti on 3d mark 06. Although there are some quirks with sli, finding a used 260 may be better bang for your buck. I love my 560ti but it's really up to you.

My 2 cents. biggrin.gif

I love my 260, it's an awesome card. And small update, Newegg has already shipped my processor out, yay.

Updated first post with pics.

Another question, I'm in NC, and Newegg shipped the processor from TN. I chose Next Day and it's already saying shipped with a tracking number on Newegg's site. What are the odds of me getting it today by any chance?

Nice upgrade you have there. Regarding Windows, did you buy a retail copy or an OEM one? If retail you should be fine as long as your not running Windows with the same key on another rig. If it is OEM you might be out of luck, although you might be able to call them up and explain your situation.

I bought Windows Pro through my school, so probably OEM. DigitalRiver or something around that name is who I bought it from.

I can't wait to see how much of an increase this is going to be over this E8400 I have XD. I'm going to benchmark this one right now and post it to compare to afterwards, should be a fun comparison.

Btw there is no point of having more than 8gb of ram for gaming, so if thats the primary use of the system dont bother buying another set of ram, spend that money on graphics or save it biggrin.gif!

It's for gaming and recording games I play, so I would assume that extra RAM would help a bit. Also, I'm taking a few networking/admin courses and having a couple VMs are really nice instead of having a bunch of small computers. But that's about it, 90% gaming, 8% recording, 2% VMs.

Plus, that RAM was like $46 so may as well once I get the other big stuff bought.

As muffin said, for gaming there isn't any real benefit for having more than 8gb of ram. I think more ram makes oc'ing harder too. (Which you better be oc'ing, it's great thumb.gif)

How does more RAM make OCing harder o.O? And I've OC'd this E8400 so of course I'll be OCing it. I want to try and get around 4.5ghz on air cooling alone, I just have to wait til I can actually get more fans to finish off my empty case fan spots and an extra for a push/pull on the heatsink, which I'm still worried about not fitting over my RAM slots and those heatsinks that close to the cpu socket on the board.

The Hyper 212+ is a huge heatsink.
