Mini FPS drops in games - Help me narrow down the issue? - Page 2

You are better off replacing the RAM with 8GB. If the HDD is the culprit, it is because of insufficient RAM. When the game needs textures, it first looks in VRAM. If it can't find it, then it looks in the RAM. If it can't find it, it looks on the HDD. So you are better replacing things in that order but since VRAM is limited, it's best if you upgrade your RAM... once you do that the game shouldn't even have to load anything from the HDD unless it hasn't been loaded in RAM yet. It depends on how the game is programmed but that is the general principle.

Let me also say that it could be a defect in the GPU as well. I've had low frames due to a defect in the GPU or drivers in the past.

Turning off HT is a good idea.

But to clarify, the min FPS of a game will most definitely be affected by a slow or faulty HDD when the game needs to seek new texture data from the local disk as you move from place to place on a map.

To save some cash, you bought a 7970 and 2600k? haha
To be honest though, batman AC runs pretty crappy even if you have a good system. Every other game i play is pretty smooth, even BF3. But once i play AC, it drops like that especially when roaming around the tops of buildings. I just bought an ssd too, downloaded it on there, and still get the same thing.

I appreciate all the feedback.

So far, I've read that the RAM is the culprit. To put it simply, I knew that buying "KingMax" isn't exactly the best brand when it comes to the RAM modules.

Do you guys have any recommendations on what RAM I should buy?

Ram is almost certainly not the culprit, unless you just don't have enough.

If the ram was faulty, you'd have far larger issues than a slow down, and there is no way you are significantly memory bandwidth limited. There is also nothing inherently wrong with KingMax.

No.

if the game streams resources from the drive, rather than preloading everything, HDD can impact framerate.

Is 4GB of RAM enough though? That's a question I'd like to ask, considering I have a 2012 PC?

I thought this, but during some stress testing, I realized that the FPS rates are relatively stable.

I have been doing this actually.

To my surprise, when I play Heroes of Newerth (A game that is similar to the concept of DotA and/or League of Legends), I can see that it utilizes 76% of my RAM. I was surprised because HoN isn't exactly an extensive game for high end PC's.

What does the RAM do when playing Batman where thoes FPS drops occure?
If that game is already on 76% i bet Batman will use even more and i would recon if you run out of RAM you get FPS drops. So in that case buy a set of 8gb ram.
