Budget Sound Card Recommendations

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so valentines day is coming up and my girlfriend knows I love computers. She wanted to buy me something for my computer for valentines day cause she knows I use it everyday. I already have everything I want but she insisted so I was thinking maybe a sound card would be nice. Now I don't want her to spend over $50 cause she works hard for her money and I don't want her to spend it like that. I was looking at the Asus Xonar DG and DS. Which one of these would you take? Would adding one of these make much of a difference versus my onboard that I am using currently? I do game but I enjoy my music more often. Which one would you guys recommend? Thanks for the help guys smile.gif

Other recommendations would be nice too, just keep in mind I want to keep it under $50.

DG is better if you use headphones alot (headphone amp and support for Dolby Headphone), DS supports 7.1 and has better sound quality and swappable OPAMPs if you want to modify how the sound card "sounds". In the end it's your choice both have their own ups and downs biggrin.gif

I'll either be using in ear earphones or my speakers (Logitech LS21 2.1)

Well if you want surround emulation in games on your headphones then DG is the way to go... I really like my DS too so its hard to decide between them, I have heard both and prefer how the DS sounds after an OPAMP upgrade, but both will serve you well in sound quality department.

Compare the features on both sound cards and decide although DG is cheaper and that also counts since you want to keep the costs down to the minimum biggrin.gif

Do you plan to get better headphones or more accurate speakers? Because to be honest a sound card isnt going to improve the clarity of your music and games unless you have the gear to let you hear the difference.

And those speakers are not going to cut it. You have yet to mention what headphones you use or plan to use. So i cant comment on that ATM.

However to answer your question. Xonar DS or DG would be perfect for you. Depending on if you want to be able to amp later down the road or not.

I'm currently using Monster Jamz earphones. I know my audio equipment is junk. I want to get a sound card and then upgrade to a nice set of headphones after.
