AMD HD3D

Always wanted to try 3D but every-time i get enough Money for Display + Glass i am using a AMD GPU instead of Nvidia GPU. With Nvidia you just buy a 3D Ready Display + They Receiver with their Glasses, Install drivers, Turn 3D ON and the Drivers Detect the Game and you get 3D. I have been trying to figure this out with AMD but i dont know where to begin. They are more open but they dont really show you what you need. I have a DLP 3D Ready Projector and no matter what i try i cant get 3D via AMD. Does anyone have experience with AMD HD3D? Or should i completely forget HD3D exists and stick to Nvidia.

Click into the FAQ and AMD HD3D Complete SetUp Guide at the lower right hand corner of this AMD link for further info.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/amd-hd3d/Pages/3d-desktop-graphics.aspx

I think you can still go ahead and it might work.  As you have all the hardware, just try it out.  No harm to try.

But even if it works, the quality will be inferior to newer TVs that support HDMI 1.4.  IIRC, 1.4 has full 3D support while 1.3 has limited/partial support.

See this excerpt from the FAQ link above.

Quote:
Q: How will 3D gaming work over HDMI and 3D TVs? Will there be a mode with 720p or is it not possible to play games on 3D TVs?

A: We support the HDMI 1.4a packed frame format to support stereo 3D at 1080p 24hz/eye, 720p 60hz/eye. This is the standard way of supporting the new breed of 3D TVs that support HDMI1.4a. For best performance, we of course recommend 720p 60Hz/eye (or 120Hz effective). Please note that you will still need middleware for gaming. We have worked with DDD and iZ3D to implement gaming over HDMI1.4a to work on new 3D TVs. There are also older 3D TVs (DLP based) that we support using middleware, but we believe that the quality is inferior to the new TVs (resolution is reduced). To enable HDMI 1.4a on AMD Radeon™ HD 5000 and HD 6000 series products, AMD Catalyst™ 10.10 (and later) is required.

If possible, better to use an 1.4a cable to increase the chance of success.

I have an Optoma HD66 which is HDMI 1.3 as well - I also have an HDMI 1.3 receiver. Ironically enough, my projector is advertised as being nvidia 3D ready, but my particular unit has old firmware that prevents it from being detected properly. As a result, I can't use 3D Vision on my projector, but the AMD solutions work fine with no issues at all.

For games you'll need:
  • 3D driver software. iZ3D and TriDef are the most popular. It seems that most people prefer TriDef.
  • I'm assuming your projector is DLP, so you will need some DLP link glasses like these from Optoma

Assuming your projector is capable of running at 120hz image quality won't suffer at all. My HD66 is 120hz, so it does 720p at 60fps per eye just like the FAQ recommends.
