Memory and Core i7

Thread Starter
So, I've been searching for weeks, and I cannot seem to find a clear answer to my question.
I'm currently building a computer for a radio station - this computer will be handling raw, loss-less, live audio streams, so speed and edurance will be imperative. The SSD is a no-brainer, same goes for the i7-2600 - but where I keep tripping up is with the memory. High-bandwidth, low-latency memory is key - but the locked version of the i7-2600 only supports 1066 and 1333.
I would prefer to buy the i7-2600 over the i7-2600k because the radio is the station for a Tech school, and there are a lot of Overclockers at this school - and I don't even want the temptation to be there. I'm all for Overclocking, just not with a computer that will literally be running 24/7 for at least a week at a time (with a quick reboot late on Tuesdays to install Windows updates) - it's going to need all the stability it can get.wink.gif

Can I use 1600Mhz memory on an i7-2600, without it being bottle-necked at 1333, or will I need to buy a i7-2600k and then clock it to match the 1600Mhz (and then have to watch the computer/DJs like a hawk to make sure the clocks aren't "improved" further)?

My suggestion would be this.
Purchase 2600K and open up RAM possibilities.
Set up a BIOS password and then lock the case.

But that's just me.

I'd think 1333MHz RAM would be fine though. The speed of the system in general will be fast enough.

The Case is going to be an Antec P280 - no lock available.

So it's true 1600? I have "1600" in my rig now, but because I have a Q6600 running at stock (2.4Ghz), it's throttled at 1066Mhz. If this is true, that would be great.

Thank you very - you just saved me from taking a complete guess and hoping for the best. The station reopens in less than a month, and I want to save enough time in case there is a DOA part (because if I didn't, something critical would need an RMA)

I don't think you will see any difference though with higher speed RAM as far as performance. RAM speeds / bandwidth doesn't do a lot for real world applications.
