Best DSLR for 720/1080p Videos Capture?

Thread Starter
Since me and my friends make a lot of comedy shorts I'm thinking it's about time to get a DSLR with 1080p capture.

I've seen people say the 500D is best for 720p @ 30fps.
I've also seen people say the D3100 is best for 1080p @ 24fps.

Keep in mind I don't want to blow my wallet for comedy shorts.

Short answer: T2i.

Long answer: too long to type on this ipad, one of the other photo forum guys can elaborate if you wish.

Canon T2i, T3i...either will do great for you.

Look here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1088761/canon-loyalty-program-faqs-originally-from-potn

Basically you trade in a old broken cheap POS P&S and you get a huge discount on a like new refurbished camera.

Personally I'd not recommend the D3100 or the 550D for anything let alone video.

As has been mentioned. The T2i will do your job. The D7000 for me has better low light capabilities but it will not shoot slow motion HD without some nifty work in post processing and that's important for some people.

It depends what glass you already have and what you think you will be able to afford later.

I'd have had no issue buying a Canon for video but it would have been a silly decision as I have over 20 Nikon F lenses. That's the only thing that decides it for me personally. I bought a D7000.

Actually it is quite simple to do some slow mo with the 60FPS, just slow the video to 40%, it is when you want to do extreme slow mo is when it calls for the nifty work with twixtor and a fast shutter setting in the camera. smile.gif

Absolutely. Unfortunately with the Nikon it's 24p in 1080 and 30p in 720 so in the interests off fairness and because i am a Nikon fanboy I felt I had to mention it smile.gif

T2i or T3i if you just want something newer, both will do the same job just about. 60D if you want to blow more cash but still does the same job but with more features. 60D will give you audio control for one and will have better servo performance for your sports pictures. honestly the t2i will suit your video needs nicely, t3i offers the swivel screen than can be helpful. you will see some improvement in the quality of video with 7D but it will be in the details and not super obvious on youtube. best bet is to buy the lesser priced camera so give you extra money to spend on a quality lens. the lens has more of an impact on the quality of the video than the camera does. cheap lenses will produce mediocre video but better lenses will produce better results. its better to have a cheaper camera with good glass than a expensive camera with cheap glass.

How? They all have the same sensor. They record in the same codec and fps...

The T3i also gives a magnification crop option in recording which the t2i, 60D and 7D don't have and manual audio controls like the 60D.

And if you use the t3i or 60D you will realize how helpful that swivel screen actually is in video mode.

most of the editors i speak with said they see differences between the cameras despite being the same sensor. biggest differences that they saw are when keying the footage from green screens. i am not an editor and cant elaborate in extreme detail explaining why. sorry but i trust the editors that i have worked with as they have been editing professionally for many years. i only go by what i am told by people that have more experience than myself. sorry if it doesnt make sense but there are other filmmakers that also agree when comparing the footage from these cameras side by side. they apparently do not have exactly the same dynamic range in video and do not all handle details the same way in the highlights midtones and shadows.
