Linux , need a windows compatible OS

Thread Starter
I'm playing with Ubuntu now, but I find it a pain to try to run some of my windows programs with wine. Maybe It's my learning curve. Are there bistros that are better suited to my needs? I have all these windows programs that I'd like to run. I'm just trying to find a better , because I feel windows is becoming more Restrictive of what I can do with the files I own. (I.E. the up and coming vista and not playing video without a new monitor). Also , How do uninstall Ubuntu to try annother bistro?

All linux café's are based on the same thing, so your gunna experience the same with all. However, other distro's may make it easier as regards to managing the controls. Try Debian Sarge. Use the Net isnt though, ten CD's is a waste. You could also wait another 10 days for FC6 to come out.

The best thing to run windows apps on, is windows. That's all there is to it. And if your desperate to run them on Linux. Try a Virtual Machine.

Could also try cross over office if you can find it free, that I'm not sure on. Saw it working MS office yesterday, did pretty good.

Main concern is backing my DVD libary ( and , yes, I know it's frownd apon ) I like to protect kid movies so the little ones don't scratch the masters. And I was hoping to still play my games( COD2 , FEAR, ECT)

Definitely don't plan on playing COD2 or FEAR on linux. You'd only want to play them on windows...just accept the fact.

Linux is good for pretty much everything else, assuming you have the patience and determination to learn...

Taking into consideration the cost of DVD-Rs, why don't you just copy them onto discs (instead of hard drive - expensive) and keep backup spindles...?

I do back them to DVD-r, but the soft ware I use doesn't pick up my DVD burner in Ubuntu.
