Don't really care. If it looks like that, I'm sticking to 7. And I've been on every new Windows since 3.1, on release day.

Every other time it is a flop then something good comes out.

I have to ask, did you use Win8?

After playing with the start menu, I must sa it's much better than the old one.

I remember elitists complained A LOT about Windows 95 UI and now they can't live without it.

I have/am using win 8 in vm ware and it has not start menu and it's somewhat frustrating to use when your in the desktop mode. Also the computer isn't just for elitist and there was a reason the 95 ui was conceived.

What pattern? Win95: Bad at first, then good, Win98: Bad at first, then good, WinME: Bad, Win2k: Good, WinXP: Bad at first, then good, Vista: Good, but everyone thought it was bad because they didn't look at it after SP1, Win7: Good simply because it's Vista with a slight makeover.

WinXP bad? LOL.

WinMe deserves a lot of respect because of the things it did, just like Vista

I find it sad and funny that people make up those patterns and then skip Win NT 4.0 and 2000 just to make a proper list.

There is enough of a pattern for me to make a decision.
Not saying it's definitely going to be bad, or that people should agree with my opinion. It's just not suited for me personally.

Honestly, I disagree with Microsofts decision to use a Windows Phone 7 looking interface on there MAIN OS venture. Such a bad idea, especially for navigation. Not to mention it looks rather ugly, but that s just me. I am sure the technological advances are great but the UI, Not so much.

Metro for PC is designed for the widescreen displays,

That screenshot is fake, the entire start menu including the bubble icon is gone now. Its all been moved to tiles on the side of the screen. Windows 8 will be for tablets/touch screen only (unless Microsoft surprises us with a desktop flavor). Or desktop users with very unique taste.

So their consumer preview is supposed to be the similar equivalent of the Windows 7 RC ?

Windows NT prior to Windows XP (as Windows XP is WIndows NT), and Windows 2000, weren't intended to be consumer/home operating systems. They came from a time where Windows NT was the business/professional OS and Windows 9x was more the home OS. Windows 2000 was just temporarily re-purposed as an option for some OEM users to fill the gap when Windows ME wasn't going over so well until Windows XP would hit (which was essentially Windows 2000 redone, much like Windows 7 was to Windows Vista, and the NT versions of these OSes reflect this).

From what I understand, yes.

The biggest complaint people have about win8 is how the start menu was changed. How many people actually use the start menu anyways? The only time I would use it is when I wanted to search something and that still works in the new start menu. The only negative thing about the new start menu is cosmetic (it's fullscreen and you scroll sideways instead of up and down), all the features are still there plus there are news ones. Then you have the actual OS that is more lightweight, boots faster, has a better task manager, improved file management, windows store, better dual monitor support and there's so much more. I think anyone who skips Win8 because they think the new start menu is ugly is really going to be missing out.

I hate the metro UI, it is ugly as hell and no way would i ever use it on any device or PC i own.

Well, the first machine I went to use it on, well, the metro interface did not work. I did not notice you have to have a resolution of 1024x768, and my netbook is 800x600, so none of the apps (I really hat that term, they are programs) would launch except IE and desktop (which is what I wanted anyway).

I installed it on a PC in my garage, and I don't really care for it, but have not played with it a lot yet. It does seem to be a very touch screen based UI, things just are not fluid with a mouse, but I can see on a tablet they would be very nice.
I will more than likely not use Windows 8. Windows 7 does everything I need, and with MS getting on a fast track for OS upgrades, I will probably be fine for another 3-4 years with their next OS comes out.

No

Beta
Consumer Preview

RC
Enterprise Preview
Yep, the current Developer Preview is more of an Alpha (Here's the proposed product).

Then comes Beta (Here's the new product after all the feed back through the Developer's hub)

Then Release Candidate (Pretty much the final product less a few bug fixes here and there)

Do you mean the same Windows ME that didn't recognize my network card or video card, even though Windows 98SE did, Windows 2000 did, and Windows XP did? I still feel like Microsoft owes me $100 for that disaster of an OS that lives on my box for about 2 weeks before I went back to 98SE. The nice new features of ME were a good idea, but since the OS simply couldn't cut it, it really didn't matter.

To be fair, that articles does have some good points, I will concede that.

You guys do realize you can switch between metro and classic UI. I don't think anyone is going to use Metro on a desktop.

Regardless I will be skipping it as I too generally skip windows releases and I've been happier with 7 then any other windows ever released.

You can only do this through a registry hack, so I really wouldn't say you can "switch", more like "force."
