What should I upgrade to run BF3 on Ultra?

Thread Starter
Hi,

Just got a pretty simple question. I hear that BF3 is very CPU dependent, but don't know it as fact. I am contemplating upgrading my CPU tomorrow along w/ my mobo to an LGA 1155. Most likely the i7 2600k. But anyway, here are my specs.

i7-920 @ 3.4ghz
5970 1GB
Asus P6T Deluxe V2
6GB RAM @ 1533mhz
Corsair 850W

Now, I hear to get AA/AF at max for BF3 you need a 2GB GPU? I hope that's not true.... don't really have the cash to upgrade to a new GPU right now (shoulda gotten the 2GB 5970 :/)

But regardless, if I upgrade to an i7 2600k (I hear it can OC to 4-5ghz, is that true?) would that bring my FPS above 30FPS which is what i'm getting right now on ultra at 1920x1080.

Without any AA/AF would I get an FPS improvement to like 40fps with the CPU upgrade? Maybe 2x AA and 4x AF?

Sorry if the message was confusing. Just tell me what to upgrade to play BF3 above 30fps!

Thank ya

1.5gb at 1080p would be needed minimum 2gb would be preferred if your going to run x16 AF and 4x AA/MSAA.

CPU Scaling on BF3

this review is based on single player not Multiplayer but it's a good place to start...

your video card is fine (more vram would be a plus though for 1080p gaming) so I would either upgrade your CPU to a 2500k or 2600k (you will rarely see the difference between the two, the 2600k only really shines with the hyperthreading) now or wait for ivy bridge which should be coming out soon. For your motherboard I would get something like the Asus P8P67 or something from asrock.

I would say get a i5 2500k with an ASRock P67 EXTREME4 and possibly get another GPU to CF like a 6970, 6990, 7950 or 7970. Just depends on your budget but the main thing you should upgrade would be your CPU and MOBO because the 5970 has amazing performance in bf3.

Ok I dont have an i7-920 but I would think the gpu is your biggest bottleneck. I would go for a used gpu if your on a budget.

My 1100t and the 2500k both play bf3 on 1080, 64player matches, on custom (ultra preset with msaa off) and I average 70's FPS. The 1100t at 4.2ghz plays it as good as my 2500k at 4.8ghz. I just saw a used asus gtx580 in the marketplace for $360 which would do even better.

edit:

Just so you know for sure, monitor your cpu use while gaming and compare it to the gpu use, Im sure you will find the gpu is at 100% and the cpu is much less, that would show that the cpu isnt the bottleneck

I dont get it. At ultra, do you have MSAA turned on at all when you play with your 5970?

a friend of mine has mostly the same components as you and he games flawlessly at 1920x1200 with 85 frames average, 110 peak on ultra settings(thats with dual unlocked 6950's, same board and same cpu as you). i would save the cash and just bump your cpu up to 3.8-3.9GHz, buy another 6gigs of ram on the cheap, and buy another 5870 to crossfire with in order get a little more vram in the mix. dont go out and spend $500 more on a board and chip when you can get a memory kit for $50 and a used 5870 for another $150ish.

The 5970 it an extremely powerful card.

Hmmm... i dont think the cpu upgrade would change to much on fps (maybe 1-3fps) currnetly i run a i7 920 @3.6-4.0 with 3-way sli and can hit around 80-120fps (1920x1080 ultra 0xaa). I also have a 2500k but only played bf3 on it once, if i remember correctly the fps were pretty similar to the i7 920 (when both rigs had sli gtx 460s).

Maybe look into adding another gpu to the mix, i would check to see what % of the cpu your using when your playing to see if maybe you have a bottleneck with the cpu (or maybe the gpu what evers using closer to 100%)

Not sure what an extra 6 gigs of ram would do. Also, adding a 5870 wouldnt help for the vram, it would still only be running with 1 gb of vram. (at least im pretty sure thats how it works, not sure what would happen if you threw a 2gb in the mix)
