What should I upgrade to run BF3 on Ultra? - Page 5

Well OP, I would just OC your current CPU to 4ghz and get another 5870 to run trifire and hope it's enough, it wouldn't be that expensive to go this route.

For reference, me and my mate tested 2 6950s flashed with 6970 BIOS on his 4ghz i7 920 and ran the game at constant 60fps, never did it dip any lower.

Dont do anything until you are sure you cant play BF3 at ultra at above 30fps.

Your GPU is faster than my GTX 580, your CPU is no slouch. and I get above 30fps at ultra. No reason why your rig shouldnt.

BF3 is an indomable beast regarding to ultra settings. Your computer is fine but you have too much GPU power and a low amount of Vram, which ends up not letting you max it out.

So, I'd OC that 920 to 4-4.2ghz and upgrade the graphics card to a 1.5gb or more one, you'll be able to sell the 5970 for a nice amount of money and then get the 7950 for example and OC it to the max.

I play BF3 at ultra with 4x MSAA I have no problem getting 60+ fps
Even my old rig running a q9550 @ 4.08ghz and a overclocked gtx465 runs the game on high/ultra @ 1080p with no msaa or hbao while achieving 60 fps.

Just get a card with plenty of v-ram and youll be fine.

My 5850CF set up (for all intents and purposes, the same as a 5970) struggled a lot with BF3 Ultra, not due to the lack of processing power, but the lack of VRAM. BF3 uses HUGE amounts of VRAM, and the 1GB per GPU of the 5970 completely cripples it.
I've seen BF3 using up to 2.4GB of VRAM on my 7970s on Ultra.

I didn't read all of the posts because there are too many, but I would recommend you selling your 5970, buying a 7950 or 7970, and calling it a day. You do not need more than 4 GB of RAM. You do not need a 2500K or 2600K. You need more VRAM. I don't know what the deal is with your motherboard, but I am guessing if you need to buy a new one, theres always the OCN marketplace for a good deal on a used one. VRAM does not add up, so crossfiring your 5970 with a 5870 is not going to resolve your issue. Now, if you want the cheap way, turn off MSAA, that will likely help a ton. In my honest opinion, turning up MSAA is not a 450 dollar valued option. I would stick with what you have, as it is a good system, and not worry about it at this time.

1. It makes me kinda queasy ordering that though because almost all the motherboards now are LGA 1155. Really makes me feel like I should upgrade the CPU at the same time if i'm going to fork over almost $300 for a new mobo.

2. So if I theoretically put another card, any card, say a 5970 2GB in another PCIe slot on the mobo. Would I be able to take advantage of the 2GB VRAM on that card?

1. I would agree, but i would probably wait for ivy bridge to come out in supposedly under a month. Then depending on how that turns out, make your decision.
2. Still not sure what your not getting about the vram issue haha
With your current 2gb 5970, your gonna be limited to 1gb of vram, no matter what card you crossfire it with.
