MBA or MBP 13inch

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
I know there are lot of threads about these 2 already, but I guess each person has his own circumstance, so I would present my situation and see u guys opinions:

I am a CS student but I plan to go to grad school, so I would need to use a laptop for a while with long battery. The one i using is a HP dv6 quad edition with core i7. It heavy as hell and the charger is like a brick. It killing my back everyday i take it to school

My main purpose is, chatting, programming, running matlab, or visual studio, eclipse blah blah, watch youtube, movies and the like.
So my question is getting the MBA 13 inch with 128 SSD? I guess i dont need much, since i can put the download toys in my external hdd or using my big drive on the desktop at home. Anyway, with such conditions, which is better to buy?>

I have the MBA and I LOVE it. I have both, but I'd much rather have my MBA more than my MBP. But it's because the MBA fits my needs, your needs may need the extra power from the MBP if you plan to run a bit more than that. I have no problem doing C++ on my MBA though.

Definitely the Macbook pro 13 inch. I just don't what it is, but I have never liked the MBA.

(P.S. I have a MBP 15 inch)

Macbook Pro 13 is average-heavy for a 13", at 4.5 pounds. My reasoning, first, the Sony Vaio S 15" weighs just 4.4 pounds (1080p option, plus AMD 6630M graphics, and ~6-7 hours battery). Also there are a couple 4-pound 14" laptops (Thinkpad T420s, Toshiba Satellite R845/Tecra R840, and 14" Ultrabooks coming out soon) and a decent number of ~4.5-4.7 pound 14" laptops. Now that the MBP 13 only has integrated and an i5, it's basically like any other basic 13", except it has a backlit keyboard and it's lower resolution (1280x800 < 1366x768). MBA 13 is probably worth it's price, higher-resolution screen but it gets over an hour less battery than a MBP 13.

Now you *could* get a Portege R835 like what I have, weighs 3.2 pounds, 1" thick, standard-voltage i3/i5, and about 8 hours of battery (just today I used it for 2 hours, had 77% left, said 6:45 remaining - mostly was running PDFs, internet, and powerpoints etc.).

I'll say if you don't need to game. The Macbook Air is great.
->Purely lightweight
->Provides the power you need
->Since you'll have documents on there the SSD gives you piece of mind
->The Intel HD3000 Graphics starting with the Intel HD Graphics have come a long way from their previous generations.
->Battery life is great
->And you can dual boot smile.gif

~~In your situation i'd keep the money for a Tablet if you were to use one.
So Tablet, ultra portable Laptop, High powered Desktop.

+ everybody has their Smartphones these days.

I have had both a 15 inch MacBook Pro and now I have a MBA and will never go back. My MacBook air sadly is faster then my 2010 MacBook Pro was it does everything I need and would be great for a CS student. I am currently in Information Systems Management but I have several friends that are CD majors and love using their MBA and have zero complaints. It is super light and fits very well in almost any bag.

Get the MBA you wont regret it.

MBA, unless you want to go up to MBP 15.

The reason being MBA has better resolution and is more light weight vs. MBP 13.

The only reason you'd need to get a MBP 13' would be having a larger HD, DVD drive, and slightly faster processing power.

MBA 13 is abt 2.9lbs v. MBP at 4.5lbs... it makes a big difference in your backpack and in your lap.

I would only get the MBP 15 because you'd get a better GPU. But after ditching my MBP for MBA I don't think I could own a MBP again, just too heavy for my needs.

The battery life is somewhere around 7+ hours for the MBP and 5+ hours for the MBA. If 5 hours is enough for you, go for the MBA. The weight difference is hugely noticeable when you're lugging it around in a bag all day.

If you're compiling a lot of code you might notice a difference between the two, but I don't think it's a huge issue for everyday use. You can probably just do all the heavy lifting on your sigrig anyways.
