[Guide] Building a 2P/4P; From Start To Finish - Along with PPD Benchmarks & Gallery - Page 23

Been lurking this thread for a bit. Came into a little cash and was scoping a Sandy Bridge build when someone pointed me here as an option for a folding monster.

I am completely new to AMD, so bear with me. I doubt I will OC the system because of work and my BS program I have little time to fiddle with my computers much and I don't have the time to study AMD server overclocking right now. smile.gif

So, I am looking at a 2p setup with the SuperMicro listed in the guide. However, I can not find any of the $100 CPUs suggested in the guide, LOL I did find a pair of 6136s for $400 (so $200 each) which should do.....and I found some 6128s for $174/each.......BUT, I want the best I can get...and those are just 8 core chips...... wink.gif

Here is my question, ASSUMING this auction is for a real CPU and not a cardboard one (that price is ridiculous from a 0 feedback seller)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Opteron-Twelve-Core-Processor-Model-6234-2-4GHz-Socket-G34-Retail-w-o-Fan-/190660387911?pt=CPUs&hash=item2c643ea447

Would running the 6234 with a 6128 work effectively (I know they will both run at the lowest speed of 2Ghz) and then I can save up for the second 6234 or would it make more sense just to grab the 6136s and stick with 16 cores and deal with it? Would a pair of 6136s at stock still yield @200k ppd?

This system will be a 24/7 folder but will also functions as a media and file server for my home and maybe adding FTP for friends and family soon.

The 6234 is a 12c, where the 6128 is a 8core, i doubt they would work together on that basis...

Also the 6128 is based on Magny-cours arcitecture whereas the 6234 is based on Interlagos (Bulldozer)...

I wouldn't trust that 6234 auction with 50c let alone $1 opening bid...

Well, it has been confirmed earlier in this thread that different core count CPUs do work together, however I am wondering if that is more of a temporary solution or how it would work if it became permanent. LOL

However, the architecture would be a concern which is why I was wondering about that. Theoretically if the board can handle both types.......

As to the auction, I figure it is worth a shot.....use my AMEX so I'll be protected and worst case I am out $11 (shipping is $10). I agree though, I am going into it expecting to get ripped off. biggrin.gif

Would it be foolish to run 2x6172 and 2x6174 on an overclockable board? Would this limit the OC severely or just slightly, will they run at their designated multis or will they all conform to the lower of the 6172s?

Also, are there any reason to use more than 8GB/socket (assuming same timings and speed ofc)? I know that for desktop CPU there's no reason I've seen to go over 1GB/thread, I assume 8GB/socket is plenty good?

I'd guess those 6 module IL gonna perform not very good, maybe on par with an 8core MC, especially as they have a very low clockspeed. The 8m/16t IL performs around the same as 12c MC (slightly worse or slightly better depending on who you ask), that's why I guess the 6m/12t will perform as an 8c MC. they (IL) can't be OC at the time either, and I'm not sure if support is coming either. But for 1$ you can't complain. wink.gif

I'm gonna bet no on a 6234+6128 on the same board as they are different architectures.

Same architecture is fine. Dont bother trying different architecture on same board.
I would only go for the two 6174s if you are getting them for super cheap (less than the 6172s) or if you planned on upgrading the 6172 CPUs to 6174s such as in the case that you are able to get only two 6172 really cheap now...
It would not make sense to go out and buy two of each at their normal prices.

Perhaps it would help to know why you want to do two of each.

At this time you would be fine with 4GB per socket. Perhaps future units would be different and require much more memory...

Thanks, the reason I ask is, as you may guess, to keep my option open. Ie if I find a good deal on 6172 and then maybe a pair of 6174 pops up for a good price, as I could afford two CPUs now but maybe not all four. The best would be to have the same model across the board and that's what I'm aiming for.

How much RAM does FahCore use on a 6903/6904 with 32cores? How about you 48core guys? On my lowly machines it's about 500MB/core.

Total system memory usage is 4.6gb out of 32gb on a 6904 wu. You can get away with using just 4gb per socket if it saves you money, As far as cpu goes, remember that the system will run as fast as the slowest cpu in the system.

Systems with 2 or 4 CPUs are very cool and all, but... how cool are they? What kind of temperatures are to be expected of the CPUs?
