Been lurking this thread for a bit. Came into a little cash and was scoping a Sandy Bridge build when someone pointed me here as an option for a folding monster.
I am completely new to AMD, so bear with me. I doubt I will OC the system because of work and my BS program I have little time to fiddle with my computers much and I don't have the time to study AMD server overclocking right now.
So, I am looking at a 2p setup with the SuperMicro listed in the guide. However, I can not find any of the $100 CPUs suggested in the guide, LOL I did find a pair of 6136s for $400 (so $200 each) which should do.....and I found some 6128s for $174/each.......BUT, I want the best I can get...and those are just 8 core chips......
Here is my question, ASSUMING this auction is for a real CPU and not a cardboard one (that price is ridiculous from a 0 feedback seller)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-Opteron-Twelve-Core-Processor-Model-6234-2-4GHz-Socket-G34-Retail-w-o-Fan-/190660387911?pt=CPUs&hash=item2c643ea447
Would running the 6234 with a 6128 work effectively (I know they will both run at the lowest speed of 2Ghz) and then I can save up for the second 6234 or would it make more sense just to grab the 6136s and stick with 16 cores and deal with it? Would a pair of 6136s at stock still yield @200k ppd?
This system will be a 24/7 folder but will also functions as a media and file server for my home and maybe adding FTP for friends and family soon.
