[Guide] Building a 2P/4P; From Start To Finish - Along with PPD Benchmarks & Gallery - Page 28

Question for the future: I wanted to get a nice server set up for my home... mainly for firewall/routing/file serving purposes... would a 4p rig work for such a set up? Or will it hinder PPD by enough that I should run a 4p as a folding rig and put together a little rinky dink computer to do the network/file serving stuff?

If it's possible to bridge the two of them into one, I can probably convince the wife that we "need" a 4p rig to stream her nip/tuck seasons instead of popping in the DVDs. smile.gif

First of, is there a particular reason you need WS? What will it do besides FAH?
You will not get any BA-12/16 running native Windows client and I don't think there is any (free) VM software that you can run under Win and assign 48 cores to one VM, Vbox can go up to 16 in one guest. Hence you'll severly limit the folding performance using WIndows. VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0 can handle up to 32 cores, but I don't know if it will run under Win.

Two PSU isn't needed but can sometimes be cheaper. If one PSU is gonna be used pay a little attention to rail distribution or get one with one fat 12v rail. Running two normal ATX PSUs won't get you any benefit such as redundancy (as many server's got).

The 4P can easily handle home server duties while folding, and unless you use a lot PPD will probably not show much of a decrease. But just to be sure, get one 4P folding and one 4P home serving+folding. biggrin.gif

ESXi is its own operating system. You could install ESXi, set up a low-priority Linux VM with access to all cores for folding, then setup a Windows VM for the server stuff.

apparently they can do a little better than a 980x @ ~4.4ghz but less than dual xeon x5570's.

Getting into this a bit more serious as the money keeps rolling (not really) in.

Have anyone tried the Samsung MV-3V4G3D/US? Or are we not able to tweak it to our likings like you do on a normal desktop board, mainly timings iirc? Maybe it would be better to just go with the 1333 CAS7 Ripjaws or 1600 CAS8 Crucial.

To be honest I'm not quite sure. I have the old bios hack and had help setting it up and haven't done any intensive reading on the new hack. There's a link to the H thread dealing with the OC in the OP that should help you with all that. And a correction to my last post *engineer samples of the G34 chips can have their voltage adjusted* thats how Patriot/Eagle got a pair of them up to 3.6Ghz and all four of them up to 3.3Ghz.

I wonder if this works for all boards?

Has anyone here dealt with dead parts for these builds?
My board went bad a few months ago, I just got it back from RMA 2 days ago, they said it worked fine, but when I tried it the board will not even post. I power the thing up, light comes on and cpu fans spin, but no beep code, keyboard does not light up, nothing on computer display. They had me remove all but one CPU and all the ram, and still no beep code. I have no way of testing my own CPUs to see if there is a problem there, but I doubt all 4 CPUs would have died, and I have tried all 4 of them in slot 1.
I doubt they even tested my board...

They are suggesting I pay to mail the thing back to them with 2 CPUs and ram... anyone else have any suggestions here on what to try before I do this?
Instead of wasting more money and a few months of time to ship the thing off, should I buy a new CPU to test?
Can someone test their board to see if it gives an error beep if no CPU is installed?

SuperMicro has had a friend of mine's board for two weeks and they haven't said anything to us about the situation. They seem to be kind of scant on details and time. Probably use to dealing with big companies who don't think too much about losing one board, not a bunch of folders tongue.gif

Well crap, I just realized the board they sent be back is not even my original board like they said it was. They sent me a different board. A board that does not work.
The serial number is different, the 8 pin power connectors have part of the yellow stickers on them still (I took mine completely off), and there is an inspection sticker on the board saying June 12, 2012 (I did not mail my board until June 14, 2012)
