Advice on an 5.1 Setup!

Loha fellow forum monkeys!

I've recently got my mitts on an Asus Xonar ST and I'm wanting to upgrade my *Cough* 14 year old speaker system .....

I'm looking to get a 5.1, for pretty much everything. My PC is a home entertainment centre, from games to movies to music it does it all so I pretty much would like to get something to suit it.

Now I would like to point out, on this side of PC building. I know nothing ... so I've been going around these Audio forums gathering info and looking at others advice. So, without further ado, my suspected system:

Subwoofer : Polkaudio PSW505
Speakers : Polk Audio Monitor30 S2 -or- SuperZero 2.0
Amp : Dayton Audio DTA-100a

Now, I know its all based off reccomendations and, hell, I don't know if I need it all or not. Shamefully ><; All I can gather at the moment is that my current 5.1 has all that ( and is SPDIF ) so I figured that if I got replacement parts and stuck them together ... it should work, right ? thumb.gif

Oooh before I forget, my budget is around £300 ( Current exchange rate @ $1.58 to £1, is approx $475 budget.)

For 5.1 you want to be looking at surround sound receivers and what u stated the DTA-100A is a stereo/2 channel amp. In the UK u could look at places online like Gumtree for a good source of used working AVRs and if u aren't going for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio and HDMI in/out slightly older optical/coax AVRs can be had for cheap and u could then direct funds to getting better speakers thumb.gif

I think, after all I will go for 2.1, I currently have 5.1 but the rear and front speakers spend most of their time stacked atop one another. So i think 2.1 will but a more sensible way to go.

Any other recommendations on the above setup at all ?

Well in UK i see Vintage/used stereo amps are rather easily available and if u could land a nice NAD/Cambridge those still sound sweet for 2 channel biggrin.gif
