The amp will be powering the bookshelf speakers.
The subs I listed are powered.

You really don't want a sub that isn't powered.

You won't regret it. Having a set of good speakers, properly amplified makes a huge difference.

You will be very glad you did. For around the same price your sound will be leagues better.

okay so this is my final decision..
speakers and amp(Dayton Audio T-Amp and B652 Speaker Bundle)- http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-650
sub(dayton 10')- http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=300-633
and I have plenty of wire etc. left from my car system just one last quick noob question about the sub, how do I hook it to my sound card since it does not have a 3.5mm jack on the back here is a small pic of back just so you don't have to look it up240
p.s. + rep for munchkinpuncher for awesome links, prices, and suggestions, and FEAST for steering me clear of junk and approving. Thanks for the help can't wait till payday. Also good job staying in my price range instead of suggesting me just spend 100 dollars more and get something thats marginally better.

Connect the 3.5mm cable from your sound card to the amp, then run speaker wire from amp to sub then out from the sub to speakers.

On the back of your sub it will say In from amp, and out to speakers.

Ahh i see so the volume knob on the amp will control speaker and sub volume. Does that have any impact on volume or quality of the speakers?
Update: Couldn't wait till payday so I went ahead and ordered the b652's and amp.

Yes volume knob on amp will control speakers, I have my volume in windows at about 75% then control the rest from my amp.
Heres a pic of my B652's for size reference.
