Can an FX 4100 handle SLI GTX 460? - Page 5

If you wanna play BF3 on ultra then i5 and GTX 460 SLI will still not be enough. You need more VRAM and more GPU power. CPU isn't that important in FPS games.

It sure could - if every game was threaded for 8 cores.
The IPC is no different from an 8 core BD to the 4 core. So if a game uses 2 or 3 threads, the difference is going to be almost 0.
It's Battlefield 3 multiplayer where you could see the potential for the 8 core FX, other than that, I can only think of Crysis 2 which is threaded for more than 4 cores.

I also went through this contemplation. I had a Phenom II 955 and was either going to go with a 1100T or a 6 or 8 core FX.
I was already getting slight bottlenecks in games like TF2 which uses 2 cores so it didn't make much sense to go to a 6 core Thuban when I would had seen maybe a 5% benefit from the fact that it would overclock 200-300MHz better than my C2 955. An FX would had made it worse because the performance per core was worse when compared to the Phenom II. The only place I would had seen the benefit is BF3, BC2 and Crysis 2.

Went with the 2500K and my minimums in every game have risen full fold. BF3 minimums are GPU bottlenecked now. TF2 and other lowly threaded games like Sandy's IPC also.

If you can live with all Ultra except Texture (High) with HBAO on, an i5 and 460 SLI is -plenty.- Holds 60 FPS at 1080p(probably much more, I play with v-sync). You don't need "more GPU power" but you do need more VRAM if you want Ultra Textures on all maps. 460s can pull it off on tiny maps.

The M5A97 EVO is a pretty good board for the price, you should at least reach 4.4ghz on stock voltage with that board. You didnt specify your PSU, it might have something to do with it.
