Upgrade Options, help me decide!

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, this is something I've been mulling over a while now. I decided to dump AMD (please, no haters) and make the switch to Intel. I can't decide between a z68 1155 set-up with either an i5-2500K or i7-2x00K or an X79 set-up with the i7-3820. I'm currently running 2 GTX 470s in SLI with my AMD 965BE which is overclocked to 3.9Gigglehurtz. I imagine either one of these upgrades will be a huge improvement, I'm just trying to figure out which one makes the most sense monetarily. I would love to jump into X79 but is the cost justifiable, even with the lower cost i7-3820? As for graphics card upgrades, my next move will be to a high end single GPU. I'm not sure which one yet but I'll most likely stick with nVidia's top dog unless there's an immense performance difference. What do you guys think? Which platform would you recommend and why?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

BTW I really just game on my computer.

I'd go with the 1155, the cost / performance ratio is better.

That's kind of what I was thinking... but I have no interest whatsoever in integrated graphics. If I go 1155 then my upgrade path would be Ivy Bridge which is supposed to be much improved IGP and a little bit improved CPU. Am I just thinking it over too hard? And would you suggest i5 or i7?

Get the i5-2500k definitely. Hyperthreading on the i7-2600k isn't needed.
you could go with a p67 or z68 gen3 mobo and an I3, I5 or I7.. then sell the cpu and drop in an Ivy bridge cpu.. Doesnt have to be a Gen3 board, Gen3 boards are more like a go between a sandy platorm and an ivy platform and cost around the same as thier traditional p67s or z68 counterparts. any H67, P67 or Z68 borad can be used with an Ivy bridge CPU with a bios flash, Gen3s have just added things like PCIe 3.0 support

Now that ivy bridge is so close i would consider holding off and going Ivy with an nice I73770K or I53570K on a z77 board.. you will have a multi of x63 so should give a better and/ or easier high range overclock, native USB 3.0 plus native 1600Mhz RAM support as shown below..

513

so you can start a sandy brdige build now, and up grade to an IB CPU, or just do an IB build either will last you a good few years.. then into the future look at skipping haswell and do a skylake build.. thumb.gif

I just threw together a buddy's first new machine in 6 years.
With a
2500k
P8Z68-V LX
Honestly, it gives great Price:Performance but if you plan to SLI/CF down the road you'd have to go a higher end mobo as that one is 16/4
Vid Card wise I'd have to suggest a 7950 or if you can find a GOOD deal on a 580 somewhere go for that.
I suggest a 7970/7950 and a i7 2600k on a asrock z68 pro 3 or an asus maximus if you've got more money to spend. These are a good choice as when the new ivy bridge cpus come out it'll be a drop in upgrade (with a bios update). You could later on tag team crossfire two 7970/7950's. thumb.gif

don't recommend asrock pro3 for overclocking..it's 4+1 phase
p8z68v-pro
on the cheap side=asrock with ex3 gen3..not the bestest for a dual-card gpu setup..bottom slot is too low
PS mad.gif Y U dump AMD?hate.hate.reowrr..mad.giflachen.gif

On the real side.. a quality amd board and 960T would be an improvement over what you're running

If you can hold out 2 months I'd say wait for IB and Kepler.

CPU wise either 1) IB will surpass SB well enough that its worth the premium, or 2) With the IB launch SB prices will dip (or you can snag a 2nd hand one).
Definitely would go with an i5 either way, don't need HT or Hex core for gaming.

GPU wise yeah the 7970 is currently king @~$550, but if Tom's leak is accurate (source) then you can get 20%> performance from the GTX 670 for $50 less.

Excellent input everyone, thanks a bunch! Looks like I'll save up for now and look to get IB after release. If i can find a sick deal on an i5 maybe I'll splurge on it, but I can wait. Thanks again everyone!
