Building new rig

Thread Starter
All right everyone, I am building a computer for my mom and I need some recommendations. She gave me two grand but obviously doesnt want to spend all of it. I basically need to build a rig that will work well for surfing the internet and regular playback of dvds and other photo related items. She will not be playing graphic intense games so the gpu doesnt have to be top of the line. I was thinking the core 2 duo but I have never worked with Intel ever so I am not entirely sure. With that being said any and all ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

if she's just a General user then this should be fine:

Core 2 Duo E6600
Abit AW9D Max
nVidia 7600GS (passive)
1GB of DDR2 800 Value Ram
250GB Western Digital SATA Drive
19 inch Hanns g Widescreen
A set of surround sound speakers
Cheap Case, keyboard, mouse set

It's late and I can't be bothered to do the specifics, but that should come to less than 2 and will give her mean performance for some time to come.

quick question sry i dont want to hijack this tread but is the 7600GS u recomended a decent gaming card with a E6400 and a gig of OCZ PC-6200 will it run games like F.E.A.R on atleast like medium or is the GT a better option i dont want to spend to much considering i will get a nice DX10 Card when they come out. but somthing that iwll last atleast a year.

and that seems liek a great choice of a system but i would recomend a 7300GT or a bit lower end GPU, either than that its a great PC very futureproof for that use.

If your mom just wants to surf the internet, watch DVDS, and edit photos you obviously don't need such an expensive computer. Get a cheaper CPU and a cheaper video card and buy better speakers, monitors, mouse/keyboard, case, etc because it seems as if that computer won't be used intensively.
