[EGM] Rumor: Next Xbox to utilize tablet controller

Plenty of rumors have been swirling as of late about Microsoft’s next Xbox—and today’s brings word that it could include some sort of tablet interface.

Here’s the gist of the rumor: The next Xbox will be a “matt-black media hub” which will include all of the kinds of upgrades and nifty new features one would expect from a next-generation console.
Along with the often-rumored Kinect 2, however, Microsoft may be throwing in yet another means of player interface. XWM says that the team at Microsoft is “experimenting” with a “tablet-like controller with a shape closer to Sony’s sleek Vita handheld / Apple’s iPad than Wii U’s bulky unit – it’s an HD screen surrounded by the traditional 360 buttons and sticks.”

If this is to believed, then it seems the next Xbox console could end up providing three different interface options: standard controller, Kinect, and this new touchscreen tablet.

I'll stick to the controller thanks, it's seriously more ergonomic than playstations controller and i'm used to it. The only touchscreen I have is my phone and i'm happy to keep it that way.

the left thumbstick hurts my left thumb when holding it up for extended periods; the bumper buttons feel cheap; the fatness of the controller makes my hands sweaty.

But I'd still take it over a tablet. Now, if this is some optional accessory that allows you to play games anywhere in the house, awesome; If it is a mandatory controller and is actually explicitly used in games, not so awesome. But, i think this is all bogus. Didn't the rumor mill say the wii U would have a controller with a screen too?

Pretty much this. While the buttons do feel cheap and my hands become sweaty after a few minutes of usage, it's still heaps better than a tablet would be.
Talking about sweaty hands; I find this fact rather peculiar. While I haven't tried any of the classic playstation controllers, my Cyborg V3 is based off the PS design, is a bit cheaper than the MS controller, and my hands never get sweaty when using it. Is MS using some sort of crappy sweat-causing plastic? headscratch.gif

I forgot about sweaty hand syndrome, every few months, yes, I will run a flat head through the creases and get what can only be described as a new life form.

I'm still on my first controller though, so by posting this, it'll break tonight, and also the sticks have worn down so much they're completely smooth. tongue.gif

I don't see this happening.

What I do see is MS wasting the wonderful opportunity to add much needed cross-platform functionality between the xbox 720, WP7 and W8...

Ugh. Tablets are cool, but this doesn't mean use them everywhere whether it makes sense or not.

Sounds like it should be a Dilbert cartoon, with the PHB saying that since "tablet" is the new marketing buzzword their new product must have a tablet interface. Where the new product is something like a vacuum cleaner or washing machine.
