The size and weight didn't kill them. Brainwashing killed them.

Nope.
Im pretty sure it was size and weight.

But I do agree, flat panels dont have the same color or image quality as a good crt.

I don't think anyone here on OCN thinks LCDs are as good as top quality CRTs in terms of image quality or speed. We all know (top quality) CRTs look wonderful.

That said, not everyone has copious amounts of free desk space. Not everyone can or even wants to get a bigger desk to accommodate that. Not everyone is willing to lug the things around if they use their rig in multiple locations. Not everyone is willing to put up with their heat and sound output. Not everyone has EMI shielded equipment. Not everyone has the GPU power needed to actually take advantage of high resolutions and refresh rates. Not everyone enjoys eyestrain and damaged sight. Not everyone wants to spend a ton of money looking for one of the few remaining good CRTs when an LCD will do everything they want reasonably well without a huge list of REAL WORLD downsides.

As much as I like my video games, any time I need to make a choice between real-world benefits vs virtual ones, the real world wins. For me, and a lot of other people (likely the vast majority of most people), our lives do not allow for CRT monitors without giving up more important things than a few frames and darker blacks.

But more power to you if your willing to make that sacrifice. thumb.gif

Yea, Their size and weight is what made me switch from CRTs. Took most of the room on the computer desk. Besides getting tired of a heating sitting in my face as well as my eyes getting tired of looking at the crt screen. The Op is welcome to also walk up 4 flights of stairs in this apt when the elevator acts up. We will see if hes still have the No pain no gain set of mind when he gets up here. As the Elevator stop working correctly Alot. wink.gif

You failed to mention 4 things:
-FW retailed for a thousand bucks. Normal CRTs could not do a (by today's standards) decent resolution at 120+hz.
-They were KILLER on desk space. I gamed on a 19" CRT, and cursed the monitor every time.
-They let out a lot of harmful radiation, and you were forced to get a protective screen. My eyes got tired pretty quickly after gaming on it. I also know one person who had cluster headaches for several years because of CRTs.
-They're not portable.

In general, a professional gamer would truly benefit from using a big CRT. But a professional gamer would also be required to show up to live tournaments in order to prove themselves, and they can't carry a FW900 around with them.

For those citing "damaging eyes" and "radiation" of CRT's, both of those are unfounded and have been de-bunked many times. If you have a decent CRT that can do higher Hz in which you don't notice the flicker, your eyes will be just fine. Most people that complain about CRT flicker used really crappy models with low refresh rates.

Also, it has been proven many times that good quality CRT's with their leaded glass give off extremely low amounts of radiation. Something in the order of being outside in the sunlight for a few seconds

The FW900 is one of the better CRTs and one of the best gaming displays you can find. LCDs just aren't up to par yet, at least not anything you can get for less than the price of a kidney.

Still, I survive. I've been gaming since the days of 9" Zenith green screens on my Commodore 64, and have lived with far worse than the best I've had, so I too the demise of my Sony CRTs in stride.

I just tried an FW900 24" CRT Trinitron last night for the first time... got it at a great price and all I can say is I don't want to go back!!!!! I have 3 24" lcd Asus displays I was using in eyefinity and I just don't want to touch them anymore. The colors are incredible on this CRT I never realized how black... black is supposed to be!!!! So rich and the motion??? DONE! BF3 has never looked so fuggin incredible!

I am a CRT believer biggrin.gif

I didn't believe it at first either hippie but it is what it is... for gaming it really sets the bar. As cheap as you can get these things now I think it's definitely worth it. If you're not a hardcore gamer then clearly this isn't for you.
