Seems like they made the redhat name into a n enterprise brand. What you buy is likely support, etc.

The free version of redhat can be downloaded as the Fedora project here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Distribution/Download

Ok Trippen, you beat me

You don't have to pay for "linux". RedHat sells support, pretty much, along with a very stable OS for businesses/servers.

I'd say 95% of linux distros (distributions/versions) are free. Of course, the support you get through those is forum-based, which often turns out to be excellent...

Fedora is a fork from RedHat that happened a few years ago when RedHat went to only making enterprise linux. Thats when the Fedora Project got started, and they handed it over to the community. So Fedora is basically a test area for new things that might make it into the next RedHat release. Much like OpenSuSE is for SLED and Novell.

When the linux community say 'free' they dont mean you dont have to pay for it they mean, 'freedom', as in - you can do whatever the hell you want.

No, but you might be able to run some under WINE. There are many great Open Source Apps for Linux that you can find to replace your ones from Windows though.
