So I managed to convince a friend of mine who was selling one their HD7970's because of his xfire problems for a cheap price. It was £340 with delivery, and is of reference design from Sapphire (that's probably like $450-$490 if we were to exclude that inflated price gap on the 7970's between the EU and the US).
But I'm having some regrets - should I have just waited for Kepler or for a good non-ref one (MSI Twin Frozr III)? The price was just so tempting though since a new one costs significantly more over here smile.gif
I'm using a MSI GTX 580 Lightning (1.5GB version) atm, and it's been running great for all my games at 1920x1080p (WoW, BF3, Skyrim, SWTOR). Do you guys think it was a good deal?

If the 580 is doing well, I see no reason to replace it.
At the same time, the 7970 is so far ahead of the 580 it might be worth the upgrade.

If you have the money, why not?
Sell the 580, or Fold.

Unfortunately, I returned my HD7970 after being plagued by driver problems as well as possibly getting a poor chip that doesn't OC too well. Perhaps I should have just wanted for a non-reference version, because the one I got was just giving me all sorts of problems.

It was also just running too hot for my liking, and the noise was just a bit too much under load. OC'd, it would go over 85c in BF3 and this can't be because of the bad airflow inside my case - my 580 Lightning at 950mhz on the core maxes at just a little bit over 70c whilst stressed too.

As for the HD7970, anything over 45% on the fan would make it the loudest thing in my case, so that was another letdown. But hey, maybe I'm just expecting a bit too much, but one thing was for sure - my chip didn't OC well and as with all reference cards, it was just running too hot frown.gif
