Okay, I was all set to say that's ridiculous...since there is already an EF-S 17-55 with a constant f 2.8 that is already considered L class by most...and seems to only miss that designation since it's EF-S (and not waether sealed)...and then I clicked the link. Too funny.

That lens doesn't suck. You could make that argument for the non IS version that came before it, but not the IS version. Sure there are much better lenses, but you're going to pay for them.

I only have 3 lenses. Only 1 of them has IS.
Whats the big deal about IS? I know what it does, and I also know that if I don't have it I don't miss it.
That 18-55 feels like a child's McDonalds toy. It cheap and nasty, thus why it is a kit lens? Because they pretty much give it away. Its the reason I see them for $1 reserve on Trademe.

I have the lens. The IS version not only has IS, its much better optically. Sure its slow, doesn't have USM, and is built cheaply, but it has pretty good image quality. The 50 1.8 is also built like total crap, but can also generate some nice images. Build quality is nice, but it costs a lot of money.
