Higher FPS with lower core clock - MSI GTX 580

Thread Starter
Hello fellow overclockers. I'm fairly new to OC'ing so I was hoping some of you could help me out. I've been pushing and testing my MSI GTX 580 Lightning (2xSLI) lately and every step doing a burn-in test using Kombuster (30 min. run highest settings) as well as following up with a Benchmarking run in Metro 2033.

DirectX 11, 2500x1600, Very High quality, MSAA 4x, AF 4x, PhysX enabled, DOF enabled for 3 runs.

At one point doing this test I had my card clocked stably to:
Core Voltage: 1.218V (Max)
Core Clock: 960MHz
Shader Clock: 1920MHz
Mem Clock: 2100
Avg Temp: 71*C

Metro 2033 benchmark ran with an average 20fps. So I pushed it even further to the following:

Core Voltage: 1.218V (Max)
Core Clock: 980MHz
Shader Clock: 1960MHz
Mem Clock: 2100
Avg Temp: 66*C

This time, however, the benchmark averaged only 10fps. I ran the test twice to make sure it wasn't a fluke but both tests came back almost the same. Can anyone explain this? I definitely didn't expect to get lower fps by pushing my card. The slightly lower temp of the 980MHz run makes me assume it's not running as hard. Dare I push the card any higher?

Your input would be highly valuable and very much appreciated.

Thank you

It means that you have reached your limit, sometimes your FPS can drop if you have OC'd too far.

OCP has kicked in, you've gone too far.
