A heads up to anyone in college, if your in a computer sciences degree, VMware offers free full versions of VMware Workstations. Only catch is your school must set up the accounts with them.

If you have one of these above CPUs (or something else that would lead to 12 cores) you must use a different visualization software, a popular choice is VirtualBox which supports a lot of cores, there are a bunch of others too.
If you mean the corefix to get BA-12 WUs on a sub 12 threaded CPU, then yes as you'll only be folding on your actual core count, i.e. 8 for a 2600K.

I am running the 3930k, which is why I asked the question. I feel that the gains would not be significant if 4 cores are going unused.

I think I will hold off until after the foldathon to look into squeezing out more points from my 3930k, running bigadv's makes it tough to finish a WU between 7-10pm while I'm actually home. If I wasn't so lazy, I would setup remote desktop from my work...

Its hard to judge PPD output with only 23.5 hours due to the way points work. If you get a large WU you may only finish one or none in a 24 hour period but overall your points may be if you look at a 7 day average. Or you can get a bunch of small WUs that will report points every couple of hours but get the same points overall. Sounds like your 2500K is in the right ball park right now though. Give it some run time and it will average out.
Alternatively report back with what WU, TPF and PPD estimate your getting from HFM and we can give you a better assessment.
With the same processor and a clock in the 5GHz range people could be folding on Bigadv which yields alot more points, however, im with the recent changes im not sure its still possible on a 2500K. If your talking high points in general some people have multiple computers running under the same name or are using the HP cloud services free beta to get some additional points.

thanks for the reply, it did reassure me. The WU i had gave me around 11,000 points which was nice although it took 15 hoursish.

another thing is, do you get the base credit or the estimated one all the time? the base credit for this one was 1735 i think. the WU im on now is also estimating me just under 12,000 points, 11.5 hours to go...

thanks again for the replies

^This. It's all good that we're doing more science, but I'm non too chuffed at being knocked down a few places by HPCS jealoussmiley.gif

Just remember guys, it's not about the points, Z has just corrupted all you sheep in to thinking it is.

Not 100% sure what you are asking. As long as you finish within the deadline (no problem for you) you can ignore the 1735. You will get the 12,000ish points credited when you finish the WU. 1735 is the base but you get extra points for finishing faster which is why you will notice your PPD estimate fluctuate as you use the computer more or less for other tasks.

Take that slacker card! devil.gif

What's the best tag run with the GPU2 client and ATI GPUs? I currently have -forcegpu ati_r600.

(and on a side note, the GTX460 is also running at 99% simultaneously, win-win?)

That v6 client will net you less points, just so you know. Mixing AMD/Nvidia GPUs have never been a good idea (and have them both folding), ran a 460 (main) and 6970 (second) myself and couldn't get the drivers to properly recognize the 6970 and Afterburner wouldn't show it either so that was just pushing stock (no OC).

Thanks for the info. I wish I could keep it running on the v7 client, but it just wasn't doing anything. My guess is that its a driver issue, like Crispy mentioned, since I recently updated to Catalyst 12.1 and it had been working fine before...

And normally I don't fold on the 6970, that's what I bought the 460 for. But I thought I'd get it going for the FaT. thumb.gif Both cards seem to be working fine though, AB recognizes both. I have the 6970 as primary though.
