New to Overclocking

Thread Starter
Hey guys. Maybe you can help point me in the right direction but I am looking on information to help overclock my system.

Here is my system specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 840
ADATA DDR3 1333G XPG Gaming Series 8Gb
MSI 880G-E45 (MS-7576) MOBO
TherMax Eclipse II CPU Cooler from Spire

Looking to do a mild OC. I want it to be faster, but just as stable as stock.

Any comments, questions, advise is appreciated.

The 840 is locked so you'll have to overclock via the reference clock. There are several good OC guides as stickies here; I'd read those first.

Basically, you'll want to drop your ram multiplier and increase the reference clock while lowering the htlink multi and keeping the cpu-nb multi constant. Then you'll get an oc on the cpu and the cpu-nb. You'll probably have to increase cpu and cpu-nb voltages as you increase the reference clock higher. You'll want to do it in small steps as you figure out what its capable of.

Do you have an aftermarket heatsink? I would recommend downloading a temp program such as HWMonitor to watch your core temps while you test for stability. If you are on the stock cooler I would not recommend any overclocking without first checking your temps.

I would not recommend that you pursue any overclocking on that motherboard.  It is a low end MSI board with a failure prone 4+1 phase VRM setup (based on the 790GX-G65 design, which is failure prone) with extremely low quality and capacity, it should not be used beyond 95W TDP processors at stock speed and with the stock cooler to ensure mobo component cooling.  Unless you can get a significant OC out of an undervolt, look for a new board.
