SLI set up question.

Ok, So on my back up rig I got a second 460 GTX to play with SLI some for the first time. I have both cards installed in the right slot, and my mobo should allow for 16x on both cards but GPU-Z only read's 8x on the second card, is this right?

What is your motherboard?

Also the difference between x16 and x8 is literally slim to none.

As long as when your playing both GPU are getting usage and your FPS is higher your set smile.gif

Its the 990FXA-UD3 1.0

Just making sure I have it set up proper and noticed in GPU-z. Thanks.

Just looked up your motherboard, your first slot is x16 but 2nd x8 and 3rd x4.

So as soon as you use the x16, and x8 in SLI it limits it to x8.

Honestly I would not worry about it you would not notice a much of a performance boost if any when running x16/x16 vs x8/x8

For 990FXA-UD3 1.0, the User Manual (pages 8 and 10) says the two PCIEx16 slots (PCIEx16_1 and PCIEx16_2) should always run at x16, regardless.

If GPU-Z is showing x8, I can think of 2 possibilities:-

a) energy saving feature causing the drop to x8.  I suppose this could be due to mobo's features or the card's own.  If this happens while idling, this is likely the cause and is normal.  So, try loading the cards and see if the speed goes up to x16.

b) GPU-z is giving a faulty or is of an older version.  So, update to a newer version.

Thank you Windfire, First thing I did before I even installed the card was read the mobo hand book. Cards are in the right place. GPU-z is updated, and I did check the PCI-e power management settings and they are off.

It seems to just be a quirk, they run BF3 on 1620*1024 on ultra like butter. CPU has to be overclocked a good deal but it runs great! Shame the cards only have 1 GB of VRAM.

Thanks for answering my silly question.
