are you supposed to lap direct touch heatsinks?

or will this happen invariably? (not my picture) does it provide significant performance gains?

No, as the picture indicates, lapping a Direct-touch Heatsink will break into the hollow heatpipes.

The heatpipes use vapour to transfer heat, and are therefore hollow, if you break into them, you can kiss your temps goodbye tongue.gif

EDIT: And in now-a-day tech, there's no point to lapping a CPU or a Direct Touch Heatsink, as they're produced to a much higher degree of accuracy, meaning they are no longer so warped, you'd only lap anything if you were seriously trying to drop that 1-2*C and had something riding on it.

Some people do lap them, but it's risky.

so why does lapping a solid base that's attached to the heatpipes work but not the heatpipe lapping directly? unless there's 0 incidence of heatpipe imperfection / curvature and whatnot

The bases of the solid-base heatsinks can be slightly warped due to manufacturing defects (meaning they aren't in 100% contact with the IHS of the chip) you'd lap for this reason, and you wouldn't lap until you can see the heatpipes, just until it was 100% flat.

The heatpipes will have gaps between the IHS and such, but there's no way to lap them, or atleast not safely at all.

ah okay. does anyone have a good lapping guide for just the cpu then? wink.gif

getting a lot of conflicting information... some say use sandpaper, some brillo, others just nails. i can't believe OCN doesn't have a guide!

I lapped my Hyper 212+ (which is HDT) with just some very fine sandpaper which dropped temps like 1c. Imo its not worth it.
I didn't lap my HDT, but all I did was smooth the base a bit with 2000grit sandpaper. no difference.

I did find out it was a little concave, though.
