I just got a new ASRock Extreme 9 and 3930k setup but can’t overclock at all. If I choose any of the built in BIOS overclocks it can’t get passed the Windows 7 splash screen. It’s really confusing as CPU-Z mostly shows a core speed of 1200 MHz with a 12 multiplier. This will change under load but only to 3.5 or 3.6 GHz. I thought the 3930k default turbo mode was 3.8GHz?

Also with everything at default settings the ASRock Tuning Utility in Windows shows a CPU ratio of 38 and a CPU speed of 3.8GHz even when CPU-Z shows 1.2 GHz. If I drop the CPU ratio in the ASRock Tuning Utility to something below 35 while something is running CPU-Z shows 3.3 or 3.4 or 3.5GHz but nothing above that.

Whether or not anything is running the ASRock Tuning Utility in Windows shows 3.8Ghz so I guess it’s just showing what the normal turbo mode is for the 3930k. It’s value is changing all the time (3751.8 – 3800) like is the current CPU speed.

If set the CPU ratio in the BIOS to 32 then the ASRock Tuning Utility in Windows shows CPU ratio of 32 and CPU-Z will show 3.2 GHz under load. If set the CPU ratio in the BIOS to 38 then I can’t Windows 7 splash screen. The only BIOS CPU ratio to get passed the Windows 7 splash screen so far was 33.

Not tried others yet but what is going on? I’ve seen a few reviews of this board and CPU and they all could use the 4.0 - 4.6 built in BIOS overclocks.
