2500k not multiplying full when playing Skyrim

Thread Starter
I setup a log when playing some Skyrim and I found out that my i5-2500k stayed around its 16x multiplier. I've allowed a max x 44 multiplier but it doesn't reach it (I tested with BF3 and it's perfectly fine, it OCs to 4.4Ghz. Weirdly enough I was getting 100FPS on High setting: I turned on MSAA x 4 and now it's closer to 60, which seems high for my 560ti but I won't complain!).

It's not a huge issue: for whatever reason the FPS is maxed out at 60 and will never go higher, so I'm guessing Skyrim is just not CPU hungry.
Everything is set to High or Ultra whenever possible and I'm gaming at 1920 x 1080.

Is this normal? smile.gif Thanks!

speedstep and c1e disabled?

This thread should help. These boards can be fiddly, and do some funky things. But I managed to figure out how to get mine to stay at the proper multiplier, and actually took my 2500k to 5GHz quite easily. Hope this helps. By the way, I pretty much knew you would have the same board as me after I read your issue. Seems to be an unsolved UEFI/BIOS bug., but I found a workaround.

Good luck.

Skyrim has some sort of Vsync (iPresentInterval=0) and it's enabled by default -> so that's why you have max. 60 fps.

Skyrim is CPU hungry, but only for 2 cores/threads and it does some good scaling with CPU speed.

BF3 is another story, it's using well your CPU cores. rolleyes.gif

What kind of utility are you using to monitor the multiplier changes ?

I've disabled Vsync myself to get my card to run at 100% usage. With my new 7970 at Ultra settings and a bunch of High res edits, I get 100-160fps with 4xAA/16xAF.

Thanks for the info. I was using CoreTemp, logging mode. I stopped logging after playing and went to check temps/frequency. I had fraps running while I was playing.
