Should I get 6870 crossfire?

Thread Starter
Hey guys!
I already have one 6870 currently (model in my sig rig) and was considering getting another one.
Is this a good idea? But there is one problem. I have a coolermaster extreme power 700w (I didn't read reviews on it) and it only has 2 PCIE power connectors. I would have to use a pcie to molex. If I have to, I will buy a 6850 because then I would only need to use one PCiE to molex instead of two?
What should I do?
I play games games like BF3 and Skyrim at 1080p!

That you already have a 6870, Get another one over the 6850.
700W is enough no problem.

Im running highly overclocked 8120 and 2X 6850s overclocked and im fine on my 620W lol.

Skyrim you wont notice any real difference since its a CPU limited game. But on BF3 your frame rate should nearly double.

So it's fine to use the PCIE to molex connectors?
PCIE share the same rail as molex as I think my PSU is single rail!

What Amps can it handle on the 12V rail, To be rated 700W it should be able to take a decent amount and be no problem. Thats if its not a really budget PSU that has low amp 12V but high amp 5V and 3.3V rails.

PCIE to molex adapters are perfectly fine to use.

Not worth it in my opinion. to little VRAM. I just got a 460 GTX SLI set up in my back up rig, and while they are powerfull cards they wont last long at this time. They could play BF3 or Skyrim on full ultra @ 1080p but are VRAM bottlenecked. Same story with BF3, not enough VRAM dispite the cards having power the FPS tanks. My personal advice is to upgrade to a single card with 2GB VRAM if at all possible. my 6970 stomps my SLI 460's in BF3 and skyrim.

My overclocked 1GB 6850s in crossfire beat my single 7970 overclocked by a good 10-15fps in BF3 ultra 4X AA 1080.
1GB is enough for every current game out at 1080.

Running higher res tho you do noticed some slight slow downs. At 1200X1600 the 7970 pulls ahead on karkand maps but on the old ones they are neck and neck.
On the karkand ones if you spin around quickly frame rate drops to 40s where on the 7970 it manages to stay in the 50s. But to do that res my screen has to be running a 30hz so you dont notice it at all.

You cant mix 1GB and 2GB versions since the 2gb version would only register as a 1GB versions so your paying more for nothing.
But 2X 2gb versions would fix the vram limit.
