aye umm..that's not exactly a fantabulous OCing board
unheatsinked vrms..4+1 or 4+2 phase power..
i'd get some enzotech tall ram sinks and stick um on there ..with a fan blowing on them :lachen.gif:

Your current mobo may be holding back your current chip

Don't bother overclocking without the heatsinks or if you in any way lack VRM cooling as significant VRM heat may limit you.  You can expect over-current protection to enable which throttles the CPU based on VRM temps, causing a loss of performance.  This is common on ASUS' 4+1 phase setups.  They do have the capacity to handle overclocked 125W processors but they MUST be cooled in order for that to be safely done due to lower phase count.  Heat to VRMs reduces their power supply/conversion capacity.

Read more in my sig (About VRMs & MOSFETs) if you're not sure what I'm talking about

It took less than a week from ship to receive. thumb.gif
It's nice that you want your buddies chip, but that chip could be borked and you won't even know it til you fire up your board and possibly damage it with a borked CPU. wink.gif
Oh and have you ever thought of folding? 18 that x6 core would be a monster Folder for the cause. cool.gif

Yeah it could be borked. He is convinced that its a bad mobo. his computer is a yr old (including the chip) but he's been having his computer crash from the begginging of the computer build.. he already replaced his ram( witch i have the old 12gigs that works good wink.gif ) I ran prime 95 for 4 hrs and it didnt' crash at stock settings. ran it for 7 1/2 hrs at 200x19 ( 3800 mhz ) it was stable through the night. I'm pretty sure that he's right that it is the mobo. good for me i guess. bad for him. He's switching to intel now he says mad.gif

I"m going to read more about what your talking about. I do have patriot ram with some heat sinks that stick off of them, do those count? they seem kinda large.. i have been thinking about a fan for them.
