i am just looking now people have had both of the CPU at 3GHz i wont be overclocking it till i have it for at least 6 months, so i think i may stick with the 170 by the time i find another site which stock it and also have it in stock and have it shipped its going to cost the same, least if i get the mb and processor from the supplier it will be more convienient to send back.

If I could make a sugestion since you want your dollar to go as far as possible. If your not completely set on AMD, you would be far more future proof with Intel. I have both a 939 X2 3800 and an AM2 X2 3800 system and upgrading is pretty limited as far as next generation upgrades. When quad AMD comes out, you will have to get a new MB and processor to upgrade (Ram too if you go with 939).

If you went with a good 775 Intel board and a cheap 805D dual processor to start with, you would only have to get a new processor to upgrade your system, and that includes the new Kentsfield Quad processor. This should give you at least 2 or 3 years of easy upgrading as you get the money up to do so.

I have enjoyed AMD for over 15 years but Intel has made a comeback by being very smart about it's new products. I'm not in anyway saying that an X2 3800 system would be bad, just that your dollars would be better spent on a currently better and smarter product.

My systems now do very well but I am 99% sure my next system will be Intel, it's a smart dollar spent right now. Good luck with your new system whatever it turns out to be. Compared to your current system, you will be very happy with the difference of your new rig.

hmm i was only hoping to spend around £200 for the memory for a 805 computer i will be looking at £100 straight away.

i was thinking to keep the opteron tbh, use the 170 its similar price to the 165 but its cheaper, and then use as many components i already own as possible to save money, maybe after i have a car and able to drive i will be looking for more from a computer, but for the time being a little motherboard and processor upgrade will future proof me about 50% then i am already maybe even more, as i am demanding more from my application my Barton is coping great but i think it will be great in my brother snd dads hands. its had its time and its proven well. i think its time for me to upgrade ever so slightly and when i have a car, passed my tests and basically left school then another upgrade could go down well.

going back to what i need to know

is the Opteron 170 compatible with Abit UL8 motherboard, its somthing which i need to know.

I noted that you were planning 4x512MB RAM in the rig. Don't! If you get 2GB in an AMD rig, it's much better to get 2X1GB sticks. 4x512MB will hurt your performance! The AMD on-die memory controller does not like it.

No answer to your question about Opty + Abit... sorry

i was thinking of doing 1GB and 2x512mb, just for now, until i have the money to get myself another 1GB when i first get it, the chances are i am going to just run 1GB memory with it, but that will be getting upgraded.

it may do, or maybe not, i would need to know this before i go and throw my money at it. people are saying it takes X2 so it will probably take Opteron 170, but as i see it they are saying "may" and "probably" i am after somthing more secure for an answer.
