Is the hdd supposed to make any noise on my new Acer?

I just got an Acer Aspire 5560-sb468. I've had it for merely 4 days, and I can't remember if it made noise when I bought it as well.

I restarted it earlier and I'm in a really quiet spot at my school, and as it was loading I heard it clicking, very very quietly, it's not loud clicks, I just wanted to know- is this normal?

I can't recall if it made this sound before, nor do I know that this quiet crackling everytime the hdd led lights up is normal.

What do you guys think? I bought it from Newegg, and as soon as my exams are over, I'll ask them for a replacement if you think this is an issue.

Yes it is normal. If you want something silent and much faster, replace the HDD with an SSD instead. I put an Intel 320 160GB that I got off e-bay for $150 in my Acer 3820TG and I get an extra hour on battery, dead silent operation and lightning fast speeds!

Some very light clicking is normal. But if you hear a loud clicking or grinding noise, get your important stuff off fast.

Thanks guys. This, might I add is as quiet as the fan noise, I was just worried that it had just developed, so I wasn't sure.

I'm looking forward to getting an SSD when their prices fall a bit, but for now I'll stick to this thing, I only paid $480 for a quad A6 1.4Ghz, 4gb ddr3 and a 6720G2 with 1gb dedicated, so I'm happy as it is now, but I'm definitely going to replace it somewhere along the line.

That's a fantastic deal compared to some of the other brands offerings. How's that APU feel? I've been looking into getting one. Also, if the hard drive does fail, Acer will have no problem fixing it for you. My netbook's hdd took a crap, one phone call and 10 minutes later, a repair order was set up.

I put in my Kingston SSD Now into my laptop a while back. Now refitting my Scorpio Black I can hear it constantly spinning and sometimes clicking when accessing data tongue.gif

It's a great little computer, but I'm sorry I don't know what APU stands for, if it refers to the processor, it is pretty fast so far, boots up like lightning.

I haven't had to deal with a failure and Acers so far, but I was just worried that this is a problem, because I really don't remember my computer making this noise even earlier today or yesterday, and I was in the same room. Before 30 days are up I'd like to find out if it's normal.

I bought an ASUS not too long ago which I gave to my mom, but I'm not sure that that one made the noise as well, I'll have to check next time I'm home. I'd hate to have to throw $150 to replace the HDD really soon if this one decides to poop out within a year and a half.

It stands for Accelerated processing unit. It's kind of similar to a SoC - system on a chip. It's pretty much a quad core low power usage CPU fused with the GPU.
