3 monitors, 1 on dual GTX580's in SLI and the other two on a single card?

I have two GTX580's in SLI with 3 monitors and I do not want to run Nvidia Surround. I was thinking of using the dual GTX580's in SLI on one monitor and then pick up a third card to run the other two monitors for surfing the internet, monitoring, whatever, is this possible and if so what card should I use for the two monitors, GTX460, GTX450?

Yes, it is possible. See Nvidia's own diagram below:-

sli multi monitor configuration.JPG

If you plan only to drive a 2nd and/or 3rd monitors, then a very basic and (relatively) cheap graphics card will do (eg GT240).

However, if you wish that card also to double up as a dedicated Physx card, then that card should be more powerful (eg GTX460. GTS450 is perhaps a little weak).

On one hand, there are not many good and popular games with Physx. On the other hand, when one of the GTX580 does Physx, it will tie down the other card as well, affecting the performance of the SLIed pair.

So, you have to decide for yourself.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I will probably find the most powerful single slot card under a $150, just so it can do Physx if I want.

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

The most powerful single slot Nvidia card is Galaxy GTX460 Razor edition.

It is harder to find in the US.  Here is one source (in Hong Kong but ships worldwide) but its price of US$210 (plus another $30 for shipping) is much more than your budget of $150.

The next most powerful single slot card, as far as being a dedicated Physx card is concerned, is GTS450.  There are a few makers and Sparkle is one of them.

Here it goes for US$130.

(If your GTX580 SLI is driving a single monitor, I would have thought an additional dedicated Physx card is not useful as the pair can crunch through a single monitor resolution with enough power to spare for Physx.  But as you are running 3-monitor Surround, then I cannot say for sure.  And I cannot find online data with GTX580 SLI running Surround with a Physx card.)

I won't be running surround, just a single monitor on the two GTX580's. I tried surround and Eyefinity for awhile and just could not get use to it. For gaming it was nice, but surfing the web was a PITA because the internet window wanted span across all three monitors unless I manually adjusted the window each time. Plus, I like being able to play a game and have the other monitors setup for monitoring temps, activity and the net. I guess I will look at a basic card that is single slot with dual DVI out so that can run the two other monitors for surfing the web and basic stuff.
