What makes a motherboard better than another?

Hello.

I'm a first time builder, I recently built my sig rig in the middle of last year. I did a lot of research on what makes parts superior to others. Like GPU, CPU, PSU, and cases. But I overlooked motherboards. The motherboard in my current rig is great and I've had no problems with it. But, for future reference I'd like to know what makes some motherboards better than others?

Thanks a lot guys. thumb.gif

Power regulation, PCI layout, supported DIMM frequencies/size, aesthetics, NB/SB cooling, quantity/location of fan headers, and of course the back panel come to mind first.

Quality over quantity. Example, just because they advertise 5000+++ phases doesnt mean its going to be better tongue.gif. Also BIOS support, if they release BIOS frequently to fix current problems then thats good, but on the other hand, a lot of BIOS fixes = lots of problem in the first place tongue.gif.

What I like to look for is the type of parts they use, the warranty/rep that they have, design/look.. expandability or future features, even though its not needed it is attractive to see pcie3.0 support and other support for future cpus etc... basically how much you need for whatever you need. Like with my latest build I went for a cheaper board, but what made it cheap wasnt the quality of the parts, it was less accessories included and less features as opposed to the higher end models that have like 6+ pcie slots I only need 1-2 depending on how many I will want to use.

Thanks man that was really helpful. the board I have is perfect then for me then. I have the P8Z68-V Pro, and I plan to SLI when GTX 580 prices go down. Although it has this feature called "turbo", what does it do and is it safe to use it?
