Help merging 2 networks or running a length of cat5

So my friend calls me up because i know something about computers, and i think i got this figured out but i want to be sure.

so he handy mans at a family owned restaurant, who is getting open table. so they need a computer at the front desk that is hard wired into internet. The problem is there isn't a hardwire leading out there right now on a network with internet

they currently have their ordering/ POS stations on one network, that is just 2 switches, plugged into a windows XP machine which has a static IP, so i am thinking there is no DHCP on that network at all.

They also have another network in their backroom, running off of a cable modem to a Belkin consumer grade router.

i see 2 options, running a new line of CAT 5 from the back room to the front desk. on a technical side this is the most straight forward, and my friend can definitely do it, he is really good at things like this.

option 2, plug the router into one of the switches on the other network.

if we did the 2nd i was thinking of setting the routers subnet mask to 255.255.255.1 to separate the 2 networks out.

Would this be sufficient ?

I figure i will be told if i have to ask, just run the hardwire. but if any networking gurus have some sage advice, it would be appreciated.

thanks!

I'd say easiest thing is to run a cable off the Router in the backroom up to the Computer at front desk.
If it's doable i'd say to go for it since Ethernet is definitely a better option than non Wireless.

As for the POS clients all set up i'd say if they aren't running off a Router and off static IP's for simplicity sake just don't touch it tongue.gif
