[Toms] Eight 5.1- And 7.1-Channel Gaming Headsets, Reviewed - Page 7

post #61 of 96
I'll wrap this up nicely.

5.1 = 5 speakers 1 sub.

Headphones = 2 drivers.

You can't put 5 speakers and 1 sub on two drivers. It's just not gonna work like that lol.

Here's some binaural music. Use headphones, at least 720p

Thanks kiwi, binaural recording, I keep forgetting that. Yeah, cost seems to somehow conveniently get in the way sometimes.

Is there no way for the game engine to automatically use and/or adjust the 3D audio positioning based on the speaker setup reported by Windows? Do game engines not have flexible 3D sound capabilities in the same way they can do something like global illumination?

For anyone looking at getting the best stereo headSET, not headPHONE, you're probably looking at the Sennheiser PC360 or the Beyerdynamic MMX300. I have used to both and I can honestly say the PC360's are much more enjoyable. They are more comfortable(opinion?), have a MUCH wider soundstage(obviously, they're open backed whereas the Beyer's are closed), and the 'volume control location'/'mic mute when raised' features are VERY handy. The Beyer's do sound good, but the wider soundstage of the PC360 is immensely noticable. I will give the Beyer's the edge on build quality. They are very heavy duty...but I am not implying that the PC360 has poor build quality as it is also very durable. The pair I own have held up great. The reason I went with a headSET as opposed to a headPHONE is because I did not want to mess with a separate mic. The quality of Sennheiser's mic's is top notch and the fact that it is attached is something i was wanting(and I feel many others do). Sure i could have gotten a better sounding headPHONE for the same price or less, but the attached mic is something myself and many others want. Anyone who has used the PC350's knows they do not have the greatest soundstage and just weren't terribly impressive, but the PC360's are a big improvement and the open backs makes for a much wider soundstage(remember open backs means even those who's heads are not in the the cans can still hear the sound, and these are no excpetion to that).

TL;DR If you are looking to get the best headSET, keyword SET, the PC 360's are you're best option, as the soundstage is MUCH wider than the MMX300's.

CMSS-3D with high quality cans... best positional audio you can get - outside of dedicated speakers of course.

Then, while not gaming, turn it off.

however that's made with headphones in mind. It's called a binaural recording. This however is not realistic in terms of production costs as game makers need to cater for all sound setups.

You can't do that anyways. You need some code to calculate distances of sound sources. The game world is dyanmic, not static. Static or fixed recordings, sure, but in the game world, nothing is exactly...exact. Maybe during cut scenes, sure.

you obviously don't play FPS games. and looking at your sig rig, just get a good working mouse. no need spend 50 bucks on that.

want to spend more? get a transducer (like a buttkicker) and you will be effin' happy.
i say get the beyer dt 770 pro 80 ohm (non-drummer) and a transducer. the beyers kick out the bass, have amazing positioning, and the transducer will make you feel the bass.
need it to sound more like surround sound? you need to find a way to adjust the crossfeed, which is how much left channel comes out of the right ear, and how much right channel comes out of the left ear. THIS is what will make stereo headphones sound realistic in games, etc.
/protip

Curious why you recommended the 80 ohm instead of 250 ohm. I love my buttkicker btw tongue.gif

Unless you are running an external amplifier, you cannot properly power a set of cans with that high of an impedance. Can's with that high of an impedance rating are generally meant for studio use.

I would hope someone spending money on good headphones wouldn't skimp out on an amplifier and try to use the onboard amp even with the 80ohm. They'd be limiting the headphone's potential.
