Antec HCP-850: Good enough for i5 2500k @ 4.5 + GTX580?

Thread Starter
I haven't posted in a while, but im looking into upgrading my system; I already bought the cpu, the hyper 212 and a Cooler Master HAF 922 case. Anyway, I want to buy a gtx580 but it requires at least a 600W PSU and as you can see, the one I have right now is just terrible, so what da'ya think?

Thank you.

Yes.

You even have room for SLI if you don't overclock the 580s too aggressively.

Now that im here, what's your opinion on this PSU? I already looked for reviews myself like a responsible person, but if I can get some opinions personally then great!

For things like this, there's not much people will be able to tell you that reviews won't.

With an i5-2500k, you would really have to pull out all the stops to overload an HCP850 past what it could do, with two GTX 580s. Think volt mods and non-air cooling, and synthetic stress tests. For SLI GTX 580s with i5-2500k, 750W is more of the usual recommendation.

Generally HCP850 price is not so enticing, so there are better options. Do you really want room for SLI later or not?

Nah, I'll just go ahead and stick with a single gpu.

Anyway, over here, the HCP850 costs around 220 USD, I heard good things about the Corsair AX 750W as well, but I have no access to it where I live (Im in south america, and hardware can sometimes be expensive and hard to find); I can, however, get a AX 850W, but it's 80 USD more expensive and im on tight budget.

Thanks for your help!

yep 850w is plenty. the HCP series are great and even if the 7/850 units dont perform as well as big bro, they are still internally overspec'd and can handle >850w just fine

You'll only need a good 550w for one gtx580.

With two 580s and a 2500K, a HCP-850w will be able to handle that no problem. You can OC your cards to 1GHz if you wanted to and the HCP-850 will laugh it it up.smile.gif

But seriously, one gtx580 and no sli in the future, then 550w is all you need.

That PSU is a beast. You don't need anything near 850. You could run that on a 450W PSU. I bet that thing could almost handle tri-SLI stock 580's tongue.gif

I just got a silver stone strider gold 850w and it's an awesome power supply. It's a pretty solid unit inside, gold rating, fully modular, 950w peak power, etc. I replaced my Hx850w with it. I was a little sketchy getting a psu from a company that made cases like cooler master but rest assured it is an extremely solid one. I think that the Hx line from corsair is a little overpriced now that I think about it and now I know that there power supplies that are almost/are as great as them for a bit/a lot less. Also the modular cables are very nice, much better than that ribbon stuff my previous Hx had.
