Xonar D2X to Onkyo vis Optical out

Thread Starter
I was wondering could i do optical out (SPDIF) from my Xonar D2X to an Onkyo (onkyo tx nr709) receiver which in turn would go to a 5.1 system? Would I be able to get 5.1 from the receiver via Dolby mode, or could 5.1 come straight from the sound card?

Yes, that is possible. The D2X supports a kind of SPDIF out called Dolby Digital Live, which encodes multi-channel live surround sound (like during a game), compresses it, and sends it over a single digital line - optical, in this case - for decoding at an external source like your receiver. You can consult the Wikipedia subsection on DDL here. If it is not enabled by default, you may need to enable it in your audio control panel. There may be a section about that in your hardware manual. If you are talkinga bout just movies and things already encoded in surround sound, then you may only have to set your media player's options to output it.
