Hey all,

I'm anticipating getting the Corsair 550D when it finally arrives (pending the reviews of course -- if reviews are bad, I will opt for the 500R). I was hoping to max out on fans. I care only about the amount of cooling to noise. Preferably no LEDs. The fan itself can look like the bastard child of a goat and an octopus and if it does well, I don't care. Price is no issue.

That being said, the case can accommodate:

6x 140 mm fans (these can also be fitted with 120 mm fans)
3x 120 mm fans
1x 200 mm fan

I need a few recommendations on cooling:

i5-2500K o/c'd to ~4.5 ghz @ stock voltage
Crossfire 6870, one XFX dual fan, one reference

I plan on using a fan controller of some sort, but due to the 550D's front panel, it will likely be a Lamptron Touch.

All that being said, I've considered a few fans:

140:
Prolimatech Vortex
Thermaltake X-Silent
Enermax T.B. Silence

200:
Megaflow 200 (hoping to snag one with no LEDs off of someone here on this forum)

Any help on maximizing my CFM/dBa ratio would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for this long post!

for the 120mms, consider noctua's new pwm fans
for 140mms, consider scythe kaze maru, those fit in 120mm holes
for 200mm the megaflows are good

ChineseThunda,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, my mobo doesn't have enough slots to accommodate 9x pwm fans. I don't think commercial fan controllers can control the pwm fans either. I'm hoping to stick with 3 pin fans.

I am also planning on picking up this case (if Corsair sends out some for reviews before I get impatient and buy an Arc Midi instead) and have been contemplating fan layout. I already have a crapload of extra fans because im crazy, so these are fans I have used.

my current (i makes joke) plan. Mind you, this is tailored to my components, speeds guestimated pending thermal results:

Front: 2x Scythe Slipstream SY1225SL12M, controlled to about 800-920 depending on door open/closed. Expensive alternative, 2x Noctua NF-F12, 800-1100rpm.
Rear: 1x TY-140, controlled to 700-800 depending on how it works acoustically with the case. Alternative: Sharkoon Silent Eagle 140, tentative until it arrives this week and I try it out.
Bottom: 1x Scythe 120mm SY1225SL12M, or TY-140, depending on space constraints, tuned to 650-800rpm. Alternate: Scythe Kama FLEX 135
Top Exhaust (or possibly intake): 1x TY-140, 600-750rpm, placed in line with bottom intake, sealed off and unused during casual use.
Side: closed. Not fond of side fans (or fans over 140mm), personally, nor have I ever been impressed by their benefit/noise compromise ratio.

Enermax TB Silence (and most Enermax 'twister' bearings) become slightly unstable when mounted horizontal, in my experience, as does the TR X-Silent.

edited to make fancier.
