Problem mixing 1GB with 512MB RAM HELP

Thread Starter
All 3 of my RAM modules are Patriot Extreme. The two 512's are DDR 600, the 1GB is DDR400 2-3-2-5. I have tried every latency option there is. What happens is, the motherboard(on various boards/chipsets) will detect one 512, both 512's together, and it will detect the 1GB module by itself. But when I mix the 1GB module with either one or both of the 512's(or a 256 for that matter), the 1GB isn't even registered as being in the board in BIOS or in windows. For example, if I have the 1GB stick in DIMM 1, and a 512 in DIMM 2 and 3, it will say in the BIOS and Windows that there is 1GB of RAM as 512x2, but doesn't even show the other gig. This is happen on the socket 754 platform with both NForce3 and VIA K8 chipsets. I would be grateful for any input or advice. Thanks in advance.

Your problem lies with it being different speeds/type of memory, DDR-600 compared to DDR-400. Frankly I am surprised that the board will even work with the DDR-600 with the nF3 chipset. I know with the nF4 chipset if you had some DDR-400 and some DDR-500 in at the same time it would just default to the DDR-400 speeds. Aparently the it is all or nothing with nF3 and VIA Chipset. Have you tried a bios update in either scenerio, nVidia or VIA may have added support for such a situation and it is definitely worth a try.

A possible issue here.
The total # of ICs on each RAM module. Many MBs won't play well with modules that 8 on one side and another with 16 or 8 ICs on both sides.
The other possibility, provided the above is not the issue, is you may have to manually set the timings that both IC can work with while only 1 or the other is installed.
Get the default timings from CPU-Z for all modules.
You may have to try to relax the DDR400 timings to match the DDR600 and test thaem at those settings for stability.
The other possiblilty is even though they have the same "Extreme" name, different IS are being used and may complicate all the above possibilities.
