P4 Prescott question

Thread Starter
I'm getting a DS3 motherboard (finnially made that desision) and I currently own a P4. Can i run 800MHz Mem with the new board and my P4? Right now I have a Dell motherboard with 200MHz memory, ouch. If I can run the P4 with some new 800MHz memory I may push off getting a Core Duo for a few months. Just have some fun over clocking my current chip. Your thoughts please. Thanks

Here's the DS3 CPU support list, click me. Just make sure your P4 is on it, before you actually order the DS3.

Also, DS3 does support DDR2 800 memory if that is what your asking.

Click usercp button at the top of the page, then fill out your system specs, so we know what you have. There's socket478 prescotts, then there's 775 prescotts. Without knowing your gear, we can't help you.

This sounds like you have an older socket 478 P4, which will not work on the DS3, it is a socket 775 mobo, and uses a totally different memory controller. Hense the DDR2. If you plan to upgrade to a DS3 mobo, you will need to buy new DDR2 ram and a S775 cpu..... IF your current system is socket 478.

You're right, it sounds like he's s478, going by the ram speed he says. If that's the case, then you need the whole thing like the man says. New cpu, ram, and mobo. Also, there's video, if you're on socket 478 and ddr, you probably have agp video, or being a dell onboard video. You'll also need a pci-e video card, or a mobo with onboard vid.

Sorry for the delay I was out of town for a few days. I found out that I have a 775 based on CPU-z (great tool). I also updated my info, thanks.
One last question, the DS3 supports 800 MHz memory but will this work with my P4 chip? I guess i have no clue if 800 MHz dual channel memory works with the older P4 chips

You all have been great help thanks.
