Dashcams

Hey OCN,

I have been looking at A LOT of videos from Russia dashcam footage.... I noticed how useful they really are. I dont know where to begin with this since over here in the states it is not that common.

Anyone know how much a decent, not over the top, dashcam will cost to place in my car?

I'm also looking for a dashcam, the amount of money it could save if it proves you are not to blame for an accident really makes it worthwhile.

There seems to be a huge lack of information online though. Loads of people seem to recommend a GoPro but that would mean charging it and manually clearing files from it so it's a huge pain in the ass. I'd just wan't something to plug into the car charger and auto record the last hour or something.

So yeah hopefully someone has some info on what to get?!

you can get a gopro or similar camera camera from another brand. gopro is very popular right now and is pretty good.

or you can get a dash mount for a regular video camera. this might not be the best solution depending on what camera you already have.

http://gopro.com/

keep in mind that if you shoot video at night none of the consumer cameras will capture as nice of footage compared to daytime. all depends on your budget and just how much you want to spend. you can get some really nice quality with more money if you go DSLR with a nice fast wide lens and special mount to put it in your dash.

just an example. by no means what i am suggesting as the best one to buy

Like I said above though, don't you have to charge a GoPro and delete/store files manually? Or is there some way around that?

1080p and picture quality are really not needed for a dashcam, just a really low res, low quality (perhaps with high ISO so OK at night) camera is all you need, and ideally it would turn on and off when the car does and just keep the last 2 hour's or so of driving saved. If I had to take the cam to the car and set it up each time I wouldn't bother.

I think as long as the camera is small, can hold decent amount of footage, and able to have good night time image it should be fine. I would have to look around for something around my budget.

Still looking money is tight redface.gif

I know what you mean, I will most likely have a small frame attached on the dash where I can place and remove/hide cam every time I get out of the car.

I really don't want to remove and setup every time when I get out or get in the car. I was thing to find a small camera and hide it somewhere. Any idea ?

Check this out,

http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2011/2/18/finally-a-real-hd-mini-keyring-spy-camera-11-808.html,

Small, simple and just stick a small piece of velcro to it and somehwere on your dash. This guy does great reviews too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=iv&src_vid=pWU3ec4-p4c&annotation_id=annotation_622315&v=uj26JjSiazQ

Continuous recording every 4GB, good battery life and 4 times less then a gopro.

I think this is a very viable solution. Hope this helps.
