[MSNBC] AT&T customers surprised by 'unlimited data' limit - Page 11

The exact reason why I STILL use a trackfone. I use a cell phone for calls and texts. No $150 phone bills here and proud of it!
215 dollars a month for 4 people, 3 with iphone and I have unlocked i9100. Get speeds around 6.4Mbps, but dont use it THAT much as my computer is what I use for internet. Changed to ATT from Verizon which is 290 dollars a month for 4 people where 2 of them dont even have a data plan. One of my family members speak a lot on the phone so I was forced to get the 1400 minutes compared to 700 minutes with ATT since they have unlimited mobile to mobile.

I definitely had problem with their customer service as the dumb CSR that I got my plan didnt include insurance. Finally got it after calling a few times. Other than that, I sure dont see any reason to go back to Verizon. Paying an extra 75 dollars a month which could turn into around 90 once all my family has data plan is not worth it. I wanted T-mobile but since everyone wanted a damn iphone, ATT was my only option as Sprint coverage is garbage around my location and speeds of 0.5Mbps download were utter crap. (Tested on friends Sprint iphone at a few locations near and at my house and at a Sprint store)

Hi All,
I would like to say that this type of action from AT&T is odd, but it's not! Being a customer for phone, I-Net, and TV for several years my DSL modem went out and when I called them they wanted to charge me $200 for a new one. Being a tech I checked it out and found it to be the stepdown transformer in the external power module. After I told them that and they basically said "Too BAD, So Sad but we sell them as all or nothing units. OK so I went Radio Shack and bought a comaprable External power module for $30. So all I can say to AT&T is Too Bad, So Sad, I am waiting for a contract on my TV service to expire then I will be looking to change my $200 a month service because I feel like they made way more than enough money on meto atleast have offered me a replacement power module, and they were running a special for free DSL wireless routers at the time, but chose to treat and exisiting custpmer like crap.
So I told you all this to show that this is a pattern of behavior by this company and not an isolated snafu. I really am disappointed with ATTt. They will continue to loose customer base until they remember that the reason they are where they are isn't because of their CEO/CFO/COO, it is because of their customers. MAybe they should talk to GM about what happens when you don;t give good support for your service and products and piss off too many customers..............

OK vent over getting off my soapbox now.
Have a great day.

Just got back from cancelling both my service and my wife's. To those of you that might still be wondering there *is* a defined data usage point at which ATT will start throttling back "Unlimited" data user's, and that point is 2 Gigs. This was confirmed by both a store associate, and her store manager. Feel free to talk about the issue here on the forums, but if you really want to be heard, stop talking here, and go to the ATT store and let your wallet do the talking for you. ATT's treatment of their loyal customers is unacceptable and childish.

/rant on

I saw this play out during lunch the other day between two five year olds;
"If you give me one twinkie a month I will give you an unlimited amount of M&Ms!"
"Ok"
Kid hands over Twinkie.
"Thanks, here is a pack of M&Ms, I will give you another tomorrow."
Tomorrow:
"Ok, I would like a pack of M&Ms please."
"Oh, sorry, I only have 1 million packs of M&M at home, I might run out. So here is an M&M, a single one. I will give you another one tomorrow, and another one the next day until you give me another twinkie... and then I will give you another pack. Just understand, this is going to happen *every* month for the REST OF FIRST GRADE. I said I would give you an unlimited amount of M&Ms but I never said HOW MANY I WOULD GIVE YOU AT A TIME OR HOW FAST I WOULD GIVE THEM TO YOU LOLOLOLOLOLOL. Jokes on you sucker."

Shocked to see people cancelling their plans for no reason really. rolleyes.gif
I've gone over 2GB a lot of times (Unlimited Data Plan) and have yet to be throttled nor contacted.

Way to screw customers and get them to change plans...

I live in Canada here - 6GB bandwidth $30 monthly.. no throttle.. I've reached 5.6GB before.

I said the same thing till 3 days ago when I got my notice.

BTW, this is the e-mail they sent me also:
Quote:
High Data Usage Alert

Dear XXXXXX,

Like other wireless companies, AT&T is taking steps to manage exploding demand for mobile data. We're responding on many levels, including investing billions in our wireless network this year and working to acquire more network capacity.

As mentioned on a previous bill, we're also taking additional, more immediate steps to help address network congestion and improve reliability. One of these steps involves a change for some customers who use extraordinarily large amounts of data in a single billing period - about 12 times more data than the average smartphone user.

For the current billing cycle, your data usage indicates you could be affected by this change. Here's how it works:

Smartphone customers with unlimited data plans may experience reduced speeds once their usage in a billing cycle reaches the level that puts them among the top 5 percent of heaviest data users. These customers can still use unlimited data and their speeds will be restored with the start of the next billing cycle.

We're writing because you are in the top 5 percent of heaviest data users for this billing cycle. Because we recognize that data usage can change from month to month, you will not see reduced speeds this billing cycle.

Beginning with your next billing cycle, we'll send you a text message if you are approaching the top 5 percent of heaviest data users. We'll also send you a second text message if you cross into the top 5 percent of heaviest users, at which point you may see reduced speeds for the rest of the month.

Customers have several ways to manage extremely high data usage.

Wi-Fi offers great speeds and doesn't add to your wireless data usage. Consider using Wi-Fi when possible for applications that use the highest amounts of data, such as streaming video apps, remote web camera apps, large data-file transfers (like video) and some online gaming.

You may also consider switching to a tiered data plan if speed is more important to you than having an unlimited data plan. Customers on tiered plans can pay for more data if they need it, and will not see reduced speeds.

To estimate how much data different activities use, and find out more about Wi-Fi or tiered data plans, visit https://www.att.com/dataplans or call Customer Care at 800-331-0500.

So according to this, 2 gb is 12x the data of an "average smartphone user' (which would be 166 MB)

Seems I read almost 1/2 of AT&T's data customers are still on the unlimited plan, so I don't see this as plausable numbers.

Right... because in Post 98 I don't show indisputable evidence that they intentionally throttled my speeds from 37 Mbps down to... 0.13 Mbps down. This is the first month they have been enforcing this policy and throttling people's speeds, you may not have gone over that limit (this month), but when you do you *will* see your speeds throttled. I guess to some people having your speeds reduced by ~99.7% is acceptable. I am just not one of those people. I don't think you would be either if it was happening to you.rolleyes.gif

There's a trick to getting that cap, actually. biggrin.gif

Some XDA member decided to investigate what can trigger AT&T's "Unlimited" throttling process. He downloaded over 2GB worth of files and even torrents and tethering, but couldn't get it to work. What he did then is to stream a Netflix video. The next thing he knows it, he received a message from AT&T stating that he is in the top percentage of users and will be throttled.

Why isn't this crap even lightly regulated? IMO there is no amount of fine print you can print out to justify a 99.7% speed on an "unlimited" plan, especially if it targets specific services (+1 thing for netflix to be pissed about).
